Starbucks Denies Cockroaches and Rats Infest New York Outlets

October 29, 2010
By

Starbucks branches in New York are infested with rats and cockroaches yet the company refuses to do anything about it, say workers who have filed a complaint against the chain with the US government.

One activist, at a rally outside a Starbucks in Union Square, Manhattan, where protesters were joined by a giant inflatable rat, said: “It’s part of your job to smile excessively but at the same time I’m scared to reach into the cabinet because something might crawl in my hand.”

The campaigners released amateur footage of cockroaches and dead rats in what they said were Starbucks backrooms.

The chain denies the allegations, and argues that the complaint to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, in Washington, was “the latest tactic in an aggressive campaign against Starbucks and our partners [employees] that is designed to damage the credibility and good name of the company”.

The activists are linked to a campaign to establish a workers’ union at Starbucks. The coffee chain has rejected the unionisation demand, claiming the work environment, with the firm’s “outstanding compensation and benefits”, made unions “unnecessary”.

The official view is that New York Starbucks cafes are above average with regard to hygiene.

The city’s health department found 44 of the 201 branches in violation of its codes last year but all branches scored better than the average for a New York restaurant.

New York City Food

Food identified with New York City origins:
Hot dogs especially with sauerkraut, sweet relish, onion sauce, ketchup and/or mustard.
Manhattan clam chowder – has a clear broth, plus tomato for red color and flavor. In the 1890s it was called “New York clam chowder” and “Fulton Fish Market” clam chowder. Many restaurants in northern Rhode Island sell both red and white chowders, while the southern coast favors clear and white chowders often served alongside clam cakes. According to Good Eats the addition of tomatoes in place of milk was actually the work of Portuguese immigrants.
New York style cheesecake relies on heavy cream. It is usually made of cream cheese, eggs and egg yolks to add richness and consistency. It is baked in a special 13-15 cm (5-6 inch) tall springform pan in many restaurants. Some recipes use cottage cheese and lemon for a distinct texture and flavor or add a drizzle of chocolate or strawberry sauce.
New York style pizza originated in N.Y.C. in the early 1900s. It is wide, thin and foldable. The traditional topping were limited to tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese with any additional topping placed on the cheese. Traditionally it is hand-tossed and light on sauce.
New York style pastrami is typically sliced thin and served generously hot on rye bread. A classic New York deli sandwich (pastrami on rye) is sometimes accompanied by coleslaw and Russian dressing.
New York soft pretzels served hot off of a vendor’s cart. May also be topped with mustard.
Italian ice a frozen dessert made from either concentrated syrup flavoring or fruit puree. There are many flavors like cherry, coconut, pina colada, blueberry and lemon.
A knish is a German, Eastern European and Yiddish snack food made popular in North America by Jewish immigrants. A knish consists of a filling covered with dough that is either baked, grilled or deep fried. Knishes can be purchased from street vendors. The traditional filling is made entirely of mashed potato but fillings may also include ground meat, sauerkraut, onions, kasha (buckwheat groats) or cheese. Modern fillings include sweet potatoes, black beans, fruit, broccoli, tofu or spinach.
Eggs Benedict a dish that consists of a half of an English muffin, topped with ham or bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.
Waldorf salad which traditionally consists of raw apples, celery, grapes and walnuts dressed in mayonnaise and served as an appetizer or a light meal. The salad was created between 1893 and 1896 at the Waldorf Hotel in N.Y.C.
Lobster Newberg an American seafood dish made with lobster, butter, cream, cognac, sherry, eggs and cayenne pepper. The dish was invented by Ben Wenberg, as sea captain in the fruit trade. He demonstrated the dish at Delmonico’s Restaurant in N.Y.C. to the manager, Charles Delmonico, in 1876.
Delmonico steak refers to both a cut of beef and a presentation of steak dinner prepared from it, made world-famous by Delmonico’s Restaurant during the mid 1800s.
Some dishes invented in or alleged to have been invented in N.Y.C.:
Steak Diane made from beef tenderloin. The steak is seasoned by rubbing garlic and ground pepper into it and fried quickly in butter. Often a sauce is prepared from the pan juices using butter, shallots, cream, beef stock and Worcestershire sauce.
Egg cream a classic beverage consisting of chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer. Dating from the late 19th century and is especially associated with Brooklyn, N.Y. The home of its alleged inventor, candy store owner Louis Auster. The egg cream is almost exclusively a fountain drink. The Brooklyn Egg Cream consisted of chocolate syrup while the New York Egg Cream used vanilla syrup.
A Bloody Mary which is a popular cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and usually other spices such as Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, beef consomme or bouillon, horseradish, celery, olive, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, lemon juice, and celery salt. One version of its origin is that it was invented by Fernand Petiot in 1921 while working at the New York Bar in Paris, France, later to become Harry’s New York Bar. Another version is that it was created by George Jessel around 1939 and according to a bartender from the St. Regis Hotel in N.Y.C., Fernand Petiot invented the Red Snapper a classy name for Bloody Mary, at the St. Regis in 1934. However there was no horseradish in this recipe. Whatever its origin the Bloody Mary is intended to cure hangovers and so is generally served in the morning.
General Tso’s chicken a sweet and spicy, deep fried chicken dish that is popularly served in American and Canadian Chinese restaurants. The dish is believed to have been introduced to N.Y.C. in the early 1970s as an example of Hunan and Szechuan style cooking. It was first mentioned in The New York Times in 1977.The Reuben Sandwich a hot sandwich of layered corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian or sometimes Thousand Island dressing, grilled between slices of rye bread. One version is that it was invented by Arnold Reuben, the German-Jewish owner of the once-famous, now defunct Reuben’s Delicatessen in New York who, according to an interview with Craig Claiborne, invented the “Reuben special” around 1914.
And then there are the street vending carts. After a bit of searching I found information about some of the cities top twenty best food carts. Carlos Slim Taking $250m Stake in New York Times

May 24, 2010
By

The Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is close to a deal to pump $250m (£172m) into the New York Times’s parent company as the newspaper publisher struggles with a shrinking readership and the imminent expiry of a loan facility.

Slim, who already owns a 6.4% stake in the New York Times Company, is to get 10-year notes with warrants convertible into shares. He could also receive special dividends with a return of up to 10%, according to a report in the NYT’s own business section.

A dominant player in Mexico’s telecommunications industry, Slim is estimated by Forbes magazine to be the world’s second-richest man with a fortune of $60bn, second only to Warren Buffett.

The NYT Company, which also owns the Boston Globe and the Herald Tribune, lost $2m on continuing operations in the third quarter of 2008, although it made a bottom-line profit after an $8.6m gain on the sale of nine television stations.

Nicknamed the “Grey Lady”, the NYT is struggling with recession-hit advertising and waning sales – its daily circulation dropped by 3.6% to just over 1m in the six months to September.

The publisher has two $400m credit facilities, one of which expires in May, prompting speculation about the stability of its finances. The NYT is negotiating a sale and leaseback to borrow $225m against its office near Times Square.

John Morton, a newspaper analyst, said the level of return reportedly offered to Slim was significant: “The fact that there’s interest in borrowing money at a very substantial interest rate indicates that they’re under some stress.”

A spokeswoman for the NYT declined to comment. But the publishing company reacted angrily last week to a report in the magazine Atlantic Monthly that suggested that it could default on its loans. “While credit markets remain tight, we have been talking with lenders and, based on our conversations with them, we expect to get the financing to meet our obligations when they come due,” said the NYT in a letter to the Atlantic Monthly.

It added that it was only using $400m out of its total $800m in available credit, and therefore does not need to replace the whole of its expiring facility.

The New York Yankees

May 6, 2010
By

The New York Yankees have long been the crown jewel of Major League Baseball. They have won twenty-six world championships, which is the most in team sports, and they have won the American League pennant an astonishing thirty-nine times.

The Yankees were founded in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, but they only lasted two seasons as the Orioles before moving to New York as the New York Highlanders. They became the Yankees in 1913 and moved into Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in 1923 and the winningest team in professional sports was born.

Beginning in the 2009 season the Yankees will christen their new ballpark, which will also be known as Yankee Stadium, directly across the street from the original Yankee stadium. The new Yankee Stadium cost an estimated one point six billion dollars making it the most expensive stadium ever constructed in the United States.

The Yankees are poised to remain the dominant team of the next decade due, in part, to the additional revenue that will be generated by the new ballpark. Oddly enough there are fewer seats in the New Stadium than in the old, but there are far ore luxury boxes and premium seats.

The Yankees main competition in recent years has been the Boston Red sox, but the field is getting a little more crowded with the Tampa Bay Rays also expected to be in the mix in upcoming seasons. The Yankees finished behind both the Red Sox and the Rays in 2008 and they are determined that will not happen again anytime soon.

The Yanks have not won a World Series since the 2000 season, and that has been far too long for the ownership, fans, and most importantly players. The Yankees have beefed up their roster significantly this off-season with the expectation of ending the drought.

They went out and got the best players available in the 2008 free agent class. First baseman Mark Teixeira, starting pitcher CC Sabathia, and veteran all-star pitcher A.J. Burnett, all joined the Yankees during the off-season. They Yankees spent 423.5 million dollars on these three players for the duration of their contracts so anything less than a couple of World Championships will be a disappointment.

The Yankees and their fans are certainly hoping their free agent class of 2008 will join the ranks of the Yankee legends that have worn the pinstripes before them. The Yankees currently have twenty-one players who were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame wearing a Yankees hat on their bust, yet they have only retired sixteen of those numbers. This means that there are five players in the Baseball Hall of Fame that weren’t quite good enough to have their numbers retired by the Yankees. Now that is a star studded franchise.

The New Your Yankees are a class organization that only considers a season a success if there is a World Series trophy presented to them in October. Due to their new ballpark, great off-season signings, and the continued leadership of shortstop Derek Jeter they will be the favorites to win it all for many seasons to come.

New York to Outlaw Trans Fats in 24,000 Restaurants

New York is set to become the first city in the US to ban all but tiny quantities of trans fats from being used in its 24,000 restaurants. According to plans agreed this week by the board of health, under the mayor, Michael Bloomberg, all the city’s restaurants, cafes and street stalls will be forced to keep to a limit of half a gram of trans fats in any item served from their menus.

The move will see a sharp drop in use of the treated fats. One serving of chips contains up to eight grams.

Trans fats have been the subject of mounting concern among health experts who warn that the fats could contribute to heart disease by raising blood cholesterol levels. In a process known as hydrogenation the fats are formed by subjecting oils to high temperatures, which stabilises and solidifies them and makes them last longer. They are used in the baking of cakes, doughnuts and bread, and for deep frying.

Health campaigners say the fats have no nutritional value and can raise the risk of heart disease, a condition that kills 18,000 New Yorkers under the age of 65 each year.

The city’s board of health has set a deadline in December for consultation. Restaurants will then have until July to prepare and switch to oils or margarine with less than half a gram per serving. The health board said the move would be “cost neutral” as alternatives could be bought at the same price.

The issue of trans fats is particularly sensitive in New York, which has by far the greatest density of food outlets of any US city, about half of which still use trans fats. New Yorkers tend to eat out or have takeaways more regularly than most Americans. But the city also prides itself as being the nation’s “thought-leader” on health issues: it was the first to ban lead in paint (in 1960), and its lauded smoking ban in restaurants three years ago has been widely copied throughout the US.

The action against trans fats was, however, condemned by the New York State Restaurant Association, which represents 3,500 city restaurants. The group’s vice president, Charles Hunt, said that compared with smoking, which made other people passive victims, this was an issue entirely of personal choice. He said: “You chose what you eat and that only affects you. We don’t think it’s appropriate for a non-elected body such as the health board to make a decision that will have a big effect on restaurants across New York City.”

Denmark is the only country so far to have moved against trans fats. Chicago has floated the idea of restrictions but these would apply only to large food chains with annual sales worth more than $20m. Recently the city authorities indicated they were minded just to opt for voluntary measures.

New York has tried a year-long educational drive to persuade outlets to shift voluntarily from trans fats, but the board of health concluded the campaign had minimal impact. Some big US food chains, including Starbucks and Wendy’s, have indicated they will restrict trans fats.

New York knockout bid for Lewis-Tyson

A formal announcement of the long-awaited world heavyweight title fight between Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson is due to be made in New York tomorrow but talks continued over the weekend to resolve exactly when and where it will take place.

A multimillion-dollar last-minute bid by executives representing New York’s famous fight venue, Madison Square Garden, has upset plans to stage the fight in Las Vegas on April 6. The Garden is understood to have offered more than $10m and suggested April 13.

The problem confronting the American television companies HBO and Showtime, whose money generates most of the fighters’ huge pay cheques, is that their programme schedules do not have space at present for an April 13 broadcast. But the Garden’s offer is proving hard to resist.

Jerome Anderson, who negotiates for Lewis, revealed that a rematch clause, pitting Lewis and Tyson together for a second time later in the year, had been agreed. “Obviously it makes sense for a rematch from a business and sporting sense. It is fair to say this will be the biggest fight income of all time. It is a very exciting time and we are delighted it looks as though it’s coming around,” he said yesterday.

Photographs of an overweight Tyson on holiday in Cuba recently have fuelled speculation that the former champion will struggle to achieve any semblance of fighting fitness by April but his trainer Tommy Brookes was not worried, saying: “Mike has been waiting for this for a long time. He is like a hungry bulldog chasing a meat truck. Mike has been big all his life; it doesn’t bother me at all.”

A capacity crowd at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, gave the four-time world champion Johnny Tapia a phenomenal welcome on Saturday before the 34-year-old American, who has stepped up to featherweight, destroyed his Argen tine opponent, Eduardo Alvarez, inside the first round.

The extrovert Tapia, whose parents were both murdered and whose own life includes jail terms, drug addiction and two suicide attempts, has revelled in the warmth of the British fight public and said he would love to return. “I have always wanted to fight [Naseem] Hamed or I would take on [Marco] Barrera. It doesn’t matter – anybody, but I want another world title. I have been treated like a king in England and I would like to fight here again,” he said.

One option might be to challenge the WBO featherweight champion, Julio Pablo Chacon of Argentina, who retained his title on a split decision against the Colombian Viktor Polo. A tattoo on Tapia’s chest reads Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life). A world title fight in Britain sounds odd but Tapia’s appeal marks it as far from crazy.

The big-punching Londoner Wayne Alexander became European light-middleweight champion when he stopped Paolo Pizzamiglio, of Italy in three rounds, also on the York Hall bill.
