 1. When it’s strawberry season, buy extra to freeze. Freeze them unwashed in ziplock bags. They work great in winter time smoothies. Just take several out rinse and cut the top off and plop in the blender with a banana and orange juice.

 2. Hate making bacon because of the splatter mess? Make it in the oven. Spray a cookie sheet and line up the bacon. Bake at 375 degrees until almost done.  I drain on paper towels and store in the refrigerator in fresh paper towels. You can take out just what you need and microwave them in another paper towel until done.

 3. Isn’t slicing grapes or cherry tomatoes in half time consuming? Get 2 plastic carton container lids and put them in between the lids.  You can then easily slice them in a few strokes between the lids.

 4. Like to make pizzas on the grill in the summer? After you make the dough, roll it out into individual serving size pizza rounds. Then, grill lightly on one side. Stack them for guests to top as they wish.  Make sure they put sauce and toppings on the grilled side.  Put back on the grill to finish.

 5. Like steel cut oats, but don’t have 30 minutes to wait for it in the morning?  Make the recipe with one cup of oats and put it in a container in the refrigerator. Scoop out only what you need each morning and microwave. Works great!

Why does our body hold onto its weight when we are eating less and exercising more? One reason may have to do with the fact that when calories are restricted too much, the body thinks it is starving. When the body thinks it is starving, the metabolism shuts down to conserve fat so that you can survive. Many people end up eating 1,500 calories or fewer on an average day when they are trying to lose weight. This level of calorie intake may be low enough to slow your metabolism and put your body into starvation mode. In addition, the added exercise means the body needs more calories to maintain proper function not fewer. The body’s response to the increase in exercise when you are eating too little is to hold on to its fat stores even more than before.

Another factor that may be at play in people’s struggles to lose weight is the type of calories they are ingesting. Not all calories are created equal. It is not necessarily true that all we have to do is count calories and make sure we don’t consume too many if we want to meet our weight loss goals. For instance, foods that quickly spike blood glucose levels like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, juice, refined flours, baked white potatoes, chips, and white rice will cause more insulin to be released at a faster rate than foods that do not quickly spike blood glucose levels like temperate fruits, vegetables, whole cooked grains, beans, fish, and meat. Finally, eating less fat does not necessarily correlate to losing weight even though fat contains a lot of calories. In fact, there is growing amounts of research that suggest just the opposite. Incorporating enough fat into the daily diet can actually helps a person feel satisfied which can lead to eating fewer calories later in the day. In addition, some research is indicating that low carbohydrate diets not low fat diets are more likely to result in weight loss. It is interesting to note that over the past several decades, fat consumption in the United States has decreased; however, obesity levels have increased. Fat is simply not to blame. What is important is to eat healthy fats. Unrefined, extra virgin olive oil is one such healthy fat. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish are also considered good fats.

In summary, if you want to lose weight, do not cut your average daily calorie intake too low, eat whole foods that don’t spike blood glucose levels too quickly, and eat healthy fats. Once you are eating enough calories to support your every day functions, get exercise on most days of the week.

Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, must not have owned a dog. If dogs are anything, they are extremely intelligent and can learn many new things given the chance to show you. When training your dog, keep in mind that yelling, hitting, cursing or punishment is uncalled for, as dogs will retreat backwards the more they are yelled at. Besides, you wouldn’t treat a child like that and dogs are essentially just little children with tails and four legs!

The first thing to learn when training your dog to do anything new is to never change your verbal expression, tone or volume. If you say, “come here, boy” then do not change to “Fido, come here”. By doing this, your dog will become confused and it will cause unneeded frustration for both of you.

A couple of tips to take into consideration when training your dog is to reward him with treats for good behavior, however be sure to also give a lot of praise and patting to ensure he does not rely totally on the treats when being good. You may also think about enrolling your dog in an obedience class. Even if training is going good at home, this will give him extra practice with interaction between other animals and people.

When training your dog don’t cram everything into one day and expect him to remember it. Dogs have short attention spans and will quickly become bored, so try to keep training time down to short sessions throughout the day. Here are a few of the easier and more popular commands to teach Fido.

• Come- Use a toy or treat to encourage him to come towards you. Say “Fido, come.” As he makes his way towards you, praise him. Once he is in front of you, hold onto his collar for 30 seconds and then let go.

• Sit- Press gently down on his backside and say “sit.” You can also hold a treat above his head. When a dog is forced to look upward, he will automatically sit on his hind legs. Just as he bends to a sitting position, say “Fido, sit.” Remember to praise and reward.

• Down- Get your dog into a sitting position. Slowly guide his legs straight down in front of him until he is flat. As you are doing this, repeat “Fido, down.” Keep him in this position for 30 seconds and then praise and treat.

• Stay- Have Fido sit. As you slowly take a couple steps backward, say “Fido, stay.” Hold your hand out as you do this, palm facing him. If he moves from position, tell him “no” and return him to the starting point. If he stays, praise and treat. Don’t forget to find a ‘release command’ like “ok”, or done.” This will tell him it is okay to move.

By using persistence, consistency and patience when training your dog, you will almost effortlessly be able to teach new commands and tricks. The ‘trick’ for you is to always praise and treat. Start with these easy commands and before long you will have him doing somersaults!
