Tools for Losing Weight

Tools for Losing Weight

You have probably heard the term weight loss tools and thought what are they and do I need them? We use tools everyday for different things to help us complete a task like tightening a screw, typing a letter or even making a meal. The tools you might use to complete these tasks would include tools like a screw driver, computer and microwave oven. But when it comes to weight loss we often don’t think in terms of tools to help us achieve our goals.

A tool as defined on Wikipedia is a device or piece of equipment which typically provides a mechanical advantage in accomplishing a physical task. In more simplistic terms, a tool is anything that can help you achieve your goals and tasks. Therefore a weight loss tool is any product or device that can help you lose weight.

Weight Loss Formula

Weight loss in reality can be very difficult but in actuality is a simple formula. To successfully lose weight a person must consume fewer calories than they burn. So if the calculation for losing weight is that simple, why do so many people struggle to lose weight?

Often times people will guess at the number of calories they should eat or they guess at how many calories they burn. Other times people know how many calories they should consume and how often they should exercise for the right formula for weight loss but choose to ignore this. They instead slash calories by way too much, slowing down their metabolism, or they don’t adjust their calorie intake for their added exercise.

They do this in hopes of a quicker weight loss, but unfortunately they often end up slowing down their metabolism and may even cause weight gain or a weight loss plateau. When your metabolism slows down, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) changes and people forget to adjust their calorie intake needs for the slower metabolism. Your BMR accounts for 60 to 70% of the total calories you burn in a day and is the starting point of your weight loss formula.

The Right Weight Loss Tools for You

Although there are many weight loss tools available, and several that have different names but basically do the same thing, you don’t necessarily need them all. As stated above, the formula for weight loss is to consume fewer calories than you burn. So the first step is to determine how many calories you burn while doing everyday activities. This is your basal metabolic rate. So the first weight loss tool you need is a BMR calculator.

BMR Calculator

A BMR calculator uses a person’s gender, age, height and current weight to determine the number of calories per day you burn while at rest. This means sleeping and normal activities such as going to work, etc. These calories represent 60 to 70% of total calories burned during the day. Most BMR calculators will show you both the BMR calories and how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. These numbers are different as it will factor in your activity level. So if you are sedentary with little or no exercise, your maintenance calories and your BMR calories will be closer to each other versus if you were extremely active. Once you know your BMR and maintenance calories you are ready to calculate your calorie deficit in order to lose weight.

Exercise Calorie Calculator

Once you know your maintenance calories, then it’s time to start creating a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. You can do this by adding exercise, consuming fewer calories or a combination of both. The latter is what most experts recommend. The calculation for calories burned during exercise is actually quick complicated and has some variables that are difficult to determine. Therefore the easiest way to determine how many calories you burn is by using an exercise calorie calculator.

These calculators typically have a selection for exercise activity like aerobics, running, strength training, etc. You will also be able to pick your exercise level; low, moderate or high intensity workouts. And of course you will have a place to input in the total duration of your workout. Additionally you have a place for specifying your weight. Some exercise calorie calculators will also ask for gender and age, however these are not used to calculate the total calories burned but may be used to present you with your target heart rate zone.

Calorie Intake Calculator

The last weight loss tool I will discuss here and that you may want to use is a calorie intake calculator. Although you may know the number of calories in a lot of the foods you eat, there will be times where you don’t have access to the nutritional information. For instance, fruits and veggies at the store do not come with a food label so you have no idea what the total calories per serving are. This is where a calorie intake calculator can come in handy.

Another situation is when eating out at a restaurant. Many online calorie intake calculators now have a built in database for many restaurant menu items. This is the quickest and easiest way to determine the total calories in the foods you consume.

By using just these three simple weight loss tools you will be able to determine your total calorie intake for weight loss and build your calorie deficit through exercise and eating healthy. By burning calories and consuming fewer calories than your maintenance calories you will achieve weight loss.

The 4 Tools We Need To Lose WeightEnlarge Image

Ask most people what their New Year’s Resolutions were and you’ll likely find the answer- lose weight. With so many of us wanting to shed the pounds, why is the obesity pandemic reaching new heights?

Weight loss tends to conjure up images of near starvation and tons of cardio. Most of us do not even start on our New Year’s Resolution simply because the thought of it stops us dead in our tracks.

What if we had some tools for weight loss? 4 simple ideas that are practically guaranteed to shed fat, drop the weight, and slim us down? That would be a major first step towards a weight loss program.

Tool 1- Strength Training
We have to recognize this as a viable fat-loss method. Every pound of muscle burns 35-50 calories per day. Adding lean muscle mass is the best way to jump start and sustain fat reduction.

Tool 2- Cardio
Cardio is good, but it’s not the only tool we should use. Cardio should be done as a partner to the other ideas. Anything that gets your heart pumping will do: walking, jogging, running, dancing, swimming, biking, or house cleaning.

Tool 3- Nutrition
Nutrition is often the hardest part of the weight loss process. We simply forgot how to eat well in our culture. We need to eat protein, carbs, and fat to sustain our way of life. Cut one of the three out and imbalances will occur.

Tool 4- Rest
Rest is not a luxury. It is a necessity. We should eat well every day and we should workout 5-6 times per week. The leftover 1-2 days are meant for rest. Our muscles need time to rebuild and repair themselves.

Using strength training, cardio, nutrition and rest to our advantage will result in fat loss. There is no magic bullet. Just simple and effective tools to create the body we want. Make a promise to yourself right now. Try using the above tools consistently and to the best of your ability for 4 weeks. You’ll look great and feel amazing.

Energy Medicine Part 2: Tools And Diagnostic Techniques That Measure Energy

July 24, 2010
By

Last week, we discussed energy sources in general terms, describing vibrational frequencies and the interactions between the currents of all kinds that flow around and through us. Today I want to propose some thoughts that may seem outlandish, but I’m going to try to explain in terms that will make the concepts more clear. Here’s a revolutionary thought:

All healing takes place at the energy level.

Let’s look at some commonly accepted energy tools that are in use today in the practice of medicine. Interestingly, a number of these have been in use for decades, and their reliability is unquestioned for diagnostic and healing purposes. But putting two and two together, we’ll move on…

Years ago, a researcher discovered that the heart gives off electrical waves that can be measured. The healthy tissue in a patient gives off a very specific pattern. Stressed or dead tissue gives off a distinctly different pattern from the healthy tissue. The resultant recordings of those waves we know today as an electrocardiogram, or EKG. An EKC is a powerful diagnostic tool; it picks up the specific electrical changes in the heart’s waves when anyone being tested is having a myocardial infarction (heart attack), or has had one in the past.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is capable of determining normal and abnormal brain waves, to the point that probable sources of seizures can be diagnosed because of abnormal electrical signals given off in the brain. We have also discovered and labeled different waves per second (delta waves) have a frequency of 1-3 waves per second, called Hertz or Hz, which is seen in people in deep sleep. Theta waves have a frequency of 4-7 Hz, which is seen in different stages of sleep, and with emotional stress. Alpha waves, at 8-14 Hz, are seen in the alert state. Finally, beta waves, 14-50 Hz, are present when there is intense mental activity.

A magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is a machine capable of interpreting normal and abnormal responses of tissue to magnetic energy, from which an image can be extracted. Spectroscopy is a laboratory diagnostic tool which can identify a specific substance based on the frequency that it gives off. This frequency is measured and placed on a graph. Every substance gives off a different frequency, which can be used to identify the substance.

Ultrasound is basically a tool where sound waves are released, and as they bounce off tissue and return, this feedback can be interpreted by a machine and create an image. There are PET scans, and SPECT scans, which can differentiate healthy tissue from diseased tissue by the energy characteristics that are given off. We have many other tools in medicine, including auditory-evoked response, visual-evoked response, myograms and oculograms, all of which tell us whether that particular tissue is normal or abnormal, based on its measurable electrical output.

There are also many therapeutic tools or modalities in medicine. One of the first was pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, which releases specific low frequency, electromagnetic pulses to stimulate bone healing in non-healing bone fractures. Lithotrypsy has laser focused frequencies that are capable of breaking down kidney stones. Many of us have heard of or used light therapy for depression, called seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Acupuncture is recognized within the medical field for its effectiveness in pain relief, which is based on centuries’ old energy flow lines called meridians that flow throughout the body. There are also cold and hot laser therapy, which have been used in the healing of wounds and skin disorders.

Outside of the medical field are many energy and electrical devices that are in common use. For instance, the computer chip in your computers, or the remote controls that send frequencies to television sets, radios, light switches. Even though we don’t understand electricity, we have become accustomed to using lights and other things that need electricity to function. We even accept energy emissions from billions of light years away that are obtained through our telescopes. Gravity, much misunderstood, is a force that attracts objects from a distance to the center. A polygraph machine is capable of sensing electrical changes at the skin level, which differentiate a relaxed state of the parasympathetic nervous system and the anxious state of the sympathetic nervous system to determine the stress in peoples’ bodies in answer to specific questions.

This background is merely useful for opening up our minds to the concept of how much energy and frequencies and magnetics and electrical devices are influencing our lives today, that we take for granted, whether we understand them or not. In order for us to recognize the potential impact of energy and frequencies on the body, we’ll start by understanding how individual cells function in our bodies. That will be in our next article. For now, let’s recap the different energy tools and sources we’ve reviewed today:

In the medical field:

Electrocardiogram (EKG)
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
1. Theta waves
2. Alpha waves
3. Beta waves
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Ultrasound
1. PET scans
2. SPECT scans
Auditory-evoked Response
Visual-evoked Response
Myogram
Oculogram
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)
Lithotrypsy
Light Therapy
Acupuncture
Cold Laser Therapy
Hot Laser Therapy

Outside of the medical field:

Computer chips
Remote controls
Light travel visible through telescopes
Gravity
Polygraph machines
Cell phones
Ipods
Internet
Telephone wires

It might be interesting to take a walk around your house or office and observe the number of devices that utilize energy from known and unknown sources!

Calorie Counters Are Perfect Weight Loss Tools

May 14, 2010
By

Counting calories is a powerful technique that can help those people who want to lose excessive weight. Knowing what you eat is important as it can tell you exactly which foods are good for you, and which ones should be avoided during your diet.

Losing weight equals consuming less calories and burning the energy your body has stored (fat). That does not necessarily mean that you should starve yourself. In fact, the opposite is quite true, and you should eat plenty, but the right foods. Without adequate nutrients, your body will not burn fat, but muscle. That causes a problem, because as soon as you return to your normal diet, you will gain all the weight back, sometimes even more.

Food calorie counters are comprehensive online food and nutrition database search engines designed to inform their users about the foods they consume. For each food item entered in the search box, the program will calculate the percentage of ‘recommended daily intake value’, and offer a complete nutritional breakdown. This is useful information for dieters who not only care about calories, but are watching cholesterol, carbohydrates, saturated fat, sugars, sodium, fiber, or other dietary components.

There are numerous tools available online to help dieters in their quest to shed some weight. ‘Body Mass Index’ (BMI) and the ‘weight to height ratio’ calculators can tell overweight or obese people if their weight is excessive relative to their height, while ‘waist to hip ratio’ formulas express the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips. Although not all of these resources deliver accurate results, because they are based on estimates rather than personalized data, they can certainly help track progress.

There are several calorie counters on the market. Some are sold as applications for mobile phones, while others are actual devices you can put in your pocket or purse and take with you whenever you eat out. Although these calorie counters are quite useful, they have restrictions, and are not as popular as the online versions.

Why count calories?

A healthy lifestyle includes eating wholesome foods and working out several times a week. Exercise keeps you fit, decreases the risk of serious diseases, and can burn off excess calories.

As you know, a calorie counter is a way to count your daily caloric intake. If you consume fewer calories than what your daily ration recommends, you will lose weight; if you eat more, you will gain. For that reason, people who are on a diet will have to restrict their daily caloric intake and count the calories of the foods and drinks they ingest.

Calorie counters
Reliable calorie counters offer multiple functions. They not only calculate the caloric value of a food product, but also estimate the amount of calories your body can burn through various physical activities, such as swimming, walking, running, aerobics, weight lifting, cycling or tennis.

Through the use of calorie calculators you will soon realize that a well-balanced diet does not require you to solely dine on fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. In fact, you can basically eat anything you want, as long as it is in moderation and you adjust the rest of your meals that day accordingly. As long as your calorie intake comes in under, or equal to, your diet’s daily calorie recommendations, you are safe and will continue to lose weight.

Most Used Tools In Mammography And Fighting Breast Cancer

May 12, 2010
By

Breast cancer is a major killer of women, and thus many steps are taken to detect this form of cancer in its earliest stages. Self breast exams performed on a regular basis are important, as is a regularly scheduled mammography screen. Certain imaging centers are set up to solely deal with mammographies, and thus they have specialized needs in terms of getting their work done efficiently. One of the most used tools that you will find in many imaging centers specializing in mammography is the Candelis ImageGrid appliance. This system allows physicians and other medical personnel to not only view digital mammographies, but to also archive them, and send and receive them via the World Wide Web. Because it is a web-based system, referring physicians can use the speed of the Internet to receive lightning-fast consultations with women’s healthcare experts, and thus this type of mammography machine plays a large part in the fight against breast cancer.

The ImageGrid is used by many medical facilities as a mammography viewer. After the mammographies are captured, the digital image is then read in Dicom format by the ImageGrid appliance. One of the huge benefits that comes from using digital imaging with mammographies is that physicians can enhance the digital images themselves using the tools provided by the ImageGrid system. With film imaging, if the initial picture was no good, the patient would have to return to the imaging center for more images to be taken. Much of this has been eliminated by the use of medical digital imaging and using a mammography viewer like the ImageGrid to get improved views of the imaging and thus better patient care.

As a mammography workstation, the Candelis ImageGrid allows physicians to store and transmit medical digital images in the Dicom format. Yearly mammographies for each patient must be stored, and must be readily available for retrieval in order that physicians can compare multiple images of the same patient to see if new patterns are developing in the current images. The ImageGrid works hard in the fight against breast cancer because it allows physicians to view multiple images simultaneously, and it has vast storage capacity, even allowing for offsite backups to be made, so that patient records are kept safe even in the event of a disaster. Reports that go along with patient images can also be saved in Dicom format and read at the mammography workstation, bringing together all the information a physician needs in order to make accurate diagnoses, and thus improving patient care.

With tools like the ImageGrid, lives can be saved with early detection of breast cancer, and thus this appliance is on the forefront in the fight against breast cancer.
