So our youth have plenty of things to do, such as shoveling manure, feeding horses, herding cattle, giving assistance to the animals as they give birth, fixing fences, watering, grooming, breaking horses, growing crops, harvesting hay, and so forth. All these activities form the essentials of preparation and diligence that is needful for successful and healthy animal husbandry. Sorenson’s Ranch School is situated in a picturesque and dramatic spot, which further inspires the children. In the background of this arid region, there are high mountains elevated on each side of the valley, where the moisture accumulates in the form of snow pack most of the winter. This in turn feeds into the Koosharem Reservoir thus storing a water supply for the irrigation of the crops here at the youth ranch. Water arrives by canal down to our farm, and then is diverted into our sprinkling system. To prepare the fields for planting our young people help to remove from the freshly tilled portions the innumerable rocks, which show up with each successive ploughing of the fields. Our teens remove rocks by hand or in a wheelbarrow and transfer them out into lower fields. Planted fields are irrigated with the sprinklers. Every twelve hours or so on average, the youth have to move sprinklers for crops of oat hay or barley. For fields with alfalfa or alfalfa-grass mixes for horses, the sprinklers are moved once a day. During strenuous activity the pituitary gland produces endorphins in the human body. These are akin to natural pain relievers and give us a sense of well-being. Engaging the youngsters in a variety of ranch-style activities makes good use of these healing effects in our students’ lives. Whether it is just riding a horse through one of our glorious mountain valleys or hay-making in the sun, it is just pure pleasure to be so occupied. Often young people initially are unwilling or completely against participating in many activities that we offer in our program. It occasionally springs from teenage rebellion but more often it comes from their fear of the unknown. For many just to stand by a horse, ready to throw a saddle on it, may be quite an accomplishment on its own. Often our students earn a great deal of encouragement watching their peers succeed in performing tasks that appeared impossible or were considered foolish. As soon our students become aware of their surroundings they get knowledge and practical experience of most of the ranch work, which has to be done. How Eating Healthy Can Help Teens Excel in School

Health is not a key topic on the minds of most teenagers so it is up to adults to instill good eating habits in our children for many reasons. When teens don’t eat well, their brains and bodies don’t do as well in regards to learning and keeping their stamina up throughout the day. It can be a terrible thing for a child to fall asleep in class or lose their focus.

Obesity has been linked to poor nutrition. When your body doesn’t get what it needs, it asks for more of the less nutritious foods to make up for it. In relation to how obesity effects your teen in school, take this into consideration, kids are cruel. Obese children are often a source of ridicule. Kids that hate to even go to school or are tormented in school usually do not do well in class. Other conditions that are linked to poor nutrition are fatigue, acne, depression and poor concentration.

There are things that can be done to combat the poor nutrition that leads to failure in school and beginning with a healthy lifestyle is a good start. You should remove unhealthy foods from the home and not buy them which prevent everyone from getting into a poor nutrition cycle. Simple sugars and syrups should be removed or at least used in moderation. These include jams and jellies, ice cream, maple syrup and other products that contain high fructose corn syrup.

Get rid of those sodas and sugary drinks and get that water flowing. It is much better to stay hydrated with water as several brands of pop have caffeine in them and the sugar overload can lead to a mid-day or evening crash when your teen should be learning or doing homework. Avoid white flour as it turns into glucose that is stored in fat cells during the digestion process. Processed foods can be very poor in nutritional value and include junk food (chips, pretzels, etc.), hot dogs, sugary breakfast cereals, high sodium meals, etc. The more packaged and processed a meal is, the less nutritious it is. Saturated fats and Trans fats are a big no-no. Look for “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” on food labels and don’t buy them.

According to the FDA, a healthy diet runs about 2,000 calories. The nutrients that are needed include vitamins and minerals which can be found in grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy oils, milk, meat and beans. Get those vegetables into your diet. Most people don’t eat enough vegetables. When you sit down to that family meal you can lay out a nice salad or steam up some fresh broccoli, even if it is just a serving of frozen peas that you cook up, that is better than nothing. Meat that comes from four-legged animals is higher in saturated fats and should therefore be used in moderation. Fish, chicken, beans and other legumes are better sources of protein. Include whole grains in your diet as well as a nice glass of milk and cook with healthy oils like olive oil.

Some good menu ideas include healthy snacks that are quick, easy to eat on the go and don’t cost very much. Fruits are great snacks. Apples, oranges, bananas, etc. all have enough nutrition to give a real spurt of energy to get your teen through their day plus they have essential vitamins and minerals (like potassium, calcium and magnesium) that your body needs. You can also offer up whole grain fruit and granola bars. There are also whole grain cookies that taste great. Rice cakes with peanut butter and raisins taste better than they sound and are quick and easy.

Making healthy food choices leads to the overall well being of your teenager (as well as yourself). You want to make sure that your teenager has a good breakfast that includes whole grains, maybe some eggs for protein and a piece of fruit before sending them off to school. Proper nutrition, exercise and regular family meals all lead to a healthy lifestyle. Obesity In Teens – A New Study To Assess The Advisability Of Bariatric Surgery

The number of bariatric surgeries performed for obesity in teens has risen markedly in recent years but still represents only a fraction of the total number of weight loss surgeries carried out each year.

While surgeons are increasingly coming to the conclusion that many obese teenagers will ultimately require surgery, and that this is perhaps best performed sooner rather than later, there are nonetheless concerns about the safety of bariatric surgery in adolescents and about the longer-term effects of performing surgery at such an early age.

In 2003 a study known as LABS (Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery) was launched to look at the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery in extremely obese adults and, since its inception, some 4,000 patients have been enrolled in a series of both short-term and long-term studies. No results have yet been released as the study is still ongoing and it is expected to continue through 2007 and into 2008.

As an extension of this study a new study has now been launched, known as Teen-LABS, which will examine the benefits in risks of bariatric surgery in teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19. The study may also look at younger patients if they are considered to meet the strict criteria laid down for the study.

Teen-LABS will study adolescent patients being treated at hospitals in Birmingham, Cincinnati, Houston and Pittsburgh and is expected to enroll a total of about 200 patients over the next 5 years.

The aim of the study will be to assess the benefits and risks by comparing the data collected from the 200 teenagers in the study group with that of 200 adult bariatric patients who have suffered obesity since their teen years. In other words, it will compare the outcome of carrying out surgery in the teenage years to that of waiting until patients reach maturity before performing surgery.

The study will look at a very wide variety of data collected pre-operatively and in the two years following surgery including not simply weight but also such things as body fat, indications of diabetes, episodes of sleep apnea, depression, eating habits, nutrition, the quality of life and much more.

Although we will clearly have to wait some time before the results of the study are published and clinical decisions can be made based upon them, this is nevertheless a step in the right direction in tackling a growing problem.
