What’s So Great About Speedo’s New Swimsuit?

January 21, 2011

It’s a swimsuit so revolutionary that one athlete has claimed that it makes you feel like you’re “swimming downhill”. And, since it was launched in February, 38 world records have been broken by swimmers wearing it. Little wonder, then, that Olympic swimming teams are now falling over themselves to ditch their sponsors in order to get Speedo’s LZR Racer swimsuit in the run-up to Beijing.

So what’s all the fuss about? Would those records have been broken if a different suit had been worn? The suit took nearly four years to develop and involved enlisting the help of Nasa and a technique called computational fluid dynamics, says Jason Rance, head of Speedo’s Aqualab, the company’s global research and development facility. He says the swimsuit can reduce drag by up to 24%.

Existing all-over bodysuits, which have been used in competition swimming for 15 years, are all designed to reduce drag. One popular and somewhat counter-intuitive way of doing this is to engineer the surface so that it is rough not smooth. This has the effect of creating a small amount of turbulence in the thin layer of water flowing close to the material’s surface. The aim here is to prevent water from passing over it evenly, and so clinging to it – the same principle behind the dimples in golf balls and why the hulls of ships are rough, according to Mike Caine, director of the Sports Technology Institute at Loughborough University.

But the LZR does something different, says Rance. It is made up of two types of material, one woven and coated with water repellant, the other an extremely smooth polyurethane membrane. Both are engineered to create very little friction when water flows over it.

Another feature of the LZR is compression: it is designed to hug the body 70 times tighter than other suits. This has the effect of squashing the body together like a corset to make it more streamlined. “You’re not going to want to wear it at the beach,” says Rance. But for athletes the benefits appear to outweigh how uncomfortable it might be.

But if the suit really does work, doesn’t this amount to an unfair advantage? “It’s clearly not cheating because it doesn’t break any of the rules,” says Caine. It’s no worse than one athlete training with a better exercise machine than another, he says. Even so, for the have-not swimmers it may amount to little more than technological doping.

In English and New Zealand and some zones of Australian English, bikini are usually called togs. Some history: In all probability, since 1400 BC Roman and Greek athletes were used to dress costumes as much similar as the modern bikinis (This is well shown on frescos and findings of that historic period).

This term is less common in other parts of the Commonwealth where it can also refer to clothes in general. However, proper bathing suits (swimsuits) finalized to recreation and water sport activities, date back to the end of XIX century. Of course, speaking about women swimwear, they were one-piece swimsuits aimed to hide any sinuous, female shape.

Swimsuits can be skin-tight or loosely fitting and range from garments designed to preserve as much modesty as possible to garments designed to reveal as much of the body as possible without actual nudity. On the contrary, modern bikini swimsuits, were created and introduced in the market by the Parisian engineer Lous Reard ( the word bikini derives from an atoll of the Marshall Islands).

They are often lined with a fabric that prevents them from becoming transparent when wet. Naturally this innovation on women’s swimwear outfit -with naked gluteus and belly-, provoked clamour and diffidence in United States, where only in the 50’s was definitely accepted and introduced in the market.

A bikini or two-piece is a type of women’s swimsuit, characterized by two separate parts one covering the breasts, the other the groin, leaving an uncovered area between the two garments. Nowadays, after years of experience and style, the Italian production of bathing suits covers a big part of the business representing research, offer and purchasing volumes of swimwear.

It is often worn in hot weather and while swimming. The shapes of both parts of a bikini closely resemble women’s underwear, and the lower part of a bikini can therefore range from the more revealing thong or g-string to briefs and the more modest square-cut shorts. This is probably due to the great tradition, as well as in the sector of summer swimsuit fashion, also in the manufacturing development of the fashion clothing industry able to offer a trend and define fashion on a planetary level.

For a total globalization of swimsuit products, it is fundamental that those Italian Companies dedicated to the creation and development of summer swimwear, adopt advanced web technologies that will allow worldwide visibility and whole satisfaction of the sector demand. For this purpose, Toscana Chiarugi offers experience and professionalism in the production and online sale of swimwear thanks to promotional investments and realization of a new online catalogue illustrating the whole new summer collection.

Chiarugi is a reference point on the web for swimwear and lingerie sale, being its users not only Italian but women in general, wishing to distinguish themselves by femininity and prestige.Another score gained by the ‘made in Italy’ clothes manufacturing compared with the European and International Competition!

Swimsuit Shopping Tips: Finding the Perfect Suit to Compliment Your Body Type

December 31, 2010
By

Regardless of a women’s physical appearance, in more than 30 years in the swimsuit industry, I have never met a woman who enjoys shopping for a swimsuit. Two things that are consistent is that women hate shopping for swimsuits and women always scrutinize their own bodies, whether they are a size two or a size 16.

Help exists as swimsuit designers create swimwear with different body types in mind and trust me, the perfect suit does exist. When shopping for a must have summer wardrobe essential, I have created a few helpful hints to help you find the suit that will make you feel and look fabulous:

1. FULL BUST – Do not despair ladies there are many suits, both one piece and two piece styles, that come in D-F cups. Designers are listening to women’s’ cries for sexy and attractive suits that are specifically designed for D and DD cup women. Storm & Freya have some very attractive and young suits for women who are D through G cups. Soshanna unveiled some appealing, yet supportive designs for 2008. These suits provide support and coverage and are very much in fashion. Finally, vendors have come to realize that there are many full busted gals out there who want great looking suits that provide support and are attractive. You can find them with and without wires and with tummy control if you desire.

2. TUMMY HIDER – If you want to camouflage your tummy look for a suit that flatters and firms. Shirring, color blocking, asymmetrical patterns and surplice suits are good to take control of the mid-section. This season, the monokini is another choice that can provide a slimming illusion with a sexy appearance. This is a hybrid between a two piece and a one piece suit as its distinctive feature is fabric down the middle connecting the top and the bottom, yet revealing much of the mid-section.

3. LARGE THIGHS – Find a suit that takes the eye away from that area. Skirted tankinis are a great option, as are swim dress suits or boy short suits (jogger style).

4. HIP PROBLEMS – If you are trying to deemphasize the hip area, then you need to find a suit that flatters the leg. You should look for a suit that is cut up higher on the leg because it makes your hips look smaller. Dark bottoms are a good choice. Also try to find a suit that has interest across the top to take your eye upward, away from the hip area.

5. LONG TORSO – Suits are available in long lengths. Tankinis and two piece suits are great for long torsos too. Emphasis at the waist deemphasizes the length of the torso.

6. SMALL BUST – Many suits are available that will provide cleavage and fullness. Look for suits that have push up cups or pads inside. Shirring across the bust is also good and embellishments on the upper area also add some fullness. Find one with ruffles or a big and busy design to add emphasis to that area.

To further assist you with this shopping experience, there are a few other swimsuit fashion categories that should be considered when selecting the perfect suit to increase body confidence this summer. First, there is color. Black is timeless and always one of the top season’s colors for swimsuits. This year, navy and orange are popular hues. Swimsuit designer company Eres is featuring stylish suits, both one and two piece styles, this season in a bold orange color. Anika is offering a very sexy two piece orange style.

Complimenting bold and traditional colors, women might want to consider selecting a swimsuit with a piping detail, embellishments, or themes as a way to showcase personal style. Designer Karla Colleto offers a unique black one piece displaying a stylish black patent leather trim. Embellishments including sequins, leather, beads and Lucite are popular choices as well. Delfina’s Ivanka Bikini is a flattering young style with sequins. In the theme arena, nautical remains a strong popular themed suit style. But, nautical is not always blue and white. In fact, black and white versions dominate this season. Gideon Oberson has a few hinted nautical styles and Gottex features a deep navy suit with a nautical design with a deep V cut in the front that adds sex appeal.

After you have found the suit that makes your body look great the next shopping task is to find the cover up and accessories to further compliment your fashion style. Just as there are many choices in the swimsuit market that work with different body types, the same holds true with cover ups. Two popular options this summer include a short skirt and a big shirt cut low in the front. If you are bottom heavy, the short skirt may not be the right cover up choice for you. Take time to try on the garment with the swimsuit to see how you look. While not an absolute necessity to match the cover up with the swimsuit, there are many choices that provide a sophisticated look. Often, a cover up can even duo as a top or beach apparel item resulting in maximum usage. The long sleeve shirts look great with a pair of linen slacks or even jeans.

Finally, do not forget your head and feet when preparing for a beach weekend. A straw visor is a trendy look this year and it is easy to pack. Thong sandals continue to be the rage. Havianas thongs with the slim design are especially popular. Beach bags are great for ensuring you do not leave anything at home.

All of these items put together will result in a perfect suit for your body type along with increased body confidence and a strong fashion look while hitting the beach or hanging poolside.

Sports Media: The genius of the Swimsuit issue

November 25, 2010
By

I was not around when this meeting took place, but I can guess how it might have gone.

In February 1964, Sports Illustrated was facing a crisis. There was nothing going on in the world of sports. What to do?

Someone had to step up to the plate with a fresh idea, or the fledgling sports magazine would go under.

The meeting grew tense, as more and more bad ideas were thrown on the table. Then, someone in the back of the room suggested perhaps the most testosterone driven idea of all time.

“Why don’t we just have an issue full of chicks in bikinis.”

Genius!

The first Swimsuit Issue was a tremendous success, even though it was full of swimsuit pictures the boys at Sports Illustrated had cut out of a Sears Catalog.

These days, the Swimsuit Issue is a huge production. Top-named models are paid millions to fly to exotic locations and pose in the skimpiest of designer bikini bottoms. Apparently, these designers do not make bikini tops, so the girls have to cover as up best they can.

The genius of this issue is in its timing. Why? Because nothing is happening in February.

Football season is over, baseball has not yet begun, basketball and hockey are right in the middle of their endless seasons, and in late February, most men are single, due to poor boyfriend performance on Valentine’s Day.

This is the perfect time for a magazine full of bikini chicks to arrive on newsstands.

But, let’s be honest. Men would go buy this magazine if it came out during the first half of the Super Bowl or the reception of their wedding.

When I realized I would be writing an article about the swimsuit issue, I went to my local bookstore to buy a copy. I repeatedly told the cashier that this was for research purposes only, although I do not think she believed me.

I took the magazine home and began to gawk… er, do my research for the article.

The first thing I noticed, well, the second thing I noticed was the outrageous price of these bikinis. Swimsuit bottoms, the size of washcloths, cost over two hundred dollars. Why did I go to business school instead of swimsuit bottom design school?

The next thing I noticed was the large contingency of foreign girls in the Swimsuit Issue. Now, one of the more appealing things about Swimsuit Issues of the past was models with the “girl next door” look. Today, unless you live in the former Soviet Union, these are not the girls next door. Is it too much to ask for girls with vowels in their last names?

As long as there has been a Swimsuit Issue, there have been women’s groups protesting it. These groups claim the issue is degrading to women who wear cheap bikini bottoms. They also have raised the question — what does this have to do with sports?

A spokesperson for Sports Illustrated is on record as saying, “We are a sports magazine. Swimming is a sport. Swimmers wear swimsuits.”

All very good points, but let’s be honest, these girls are not swimmers. Although they do have certain features that aid in floating.

So, three cheers for those masterminds of print media at Sports Illustrated. Only you can get away with calling pictures of foreign girls, filled with silicon, covered with oil, wearing $200 bikini bottoms, a sports magazine.

What’s So Great About Speedo’s New Swimsuit?

October 28, 2010
