Do The Statistics On Dieting Get You Down?

It would be great if we could all succeed on the first or even fifth try, but for most people, that is not enough. We usually have much more to learn about dieting, nutrition, and what works best for us, before we can succeed. Statistics would tell us that the great majority of people who try to lose weight (some say 95%) fail miserably or have only short-lived success. But I like to look at these statistics in a different way, a way that gives us a chance to succeed.

Do all of the people who are trying to lose weight work very hard at it? I didn’t interview the whole world to find this out, but it’s quite fair to say that the answer is no. People are different, and the amount of effort they put into diets must also be different. Are you willing to work hard at your diet? Perhaps you are willing to work harder than average, or perhaps you will work in the 90th percentile. The harder you work at it, the more likely it is that you will be satisfied with your results. If you are deeply committed to losing weight, then you have just leapfrogged over more than half of the other people trying to do the same.

Another problem I have with the above statistic is that the dieters mentioned surely have varying degrees of knowledge about proper nutrition. For all we know many of “the greater majority of dieters,” are on the “Buckets O’ Chocolate” diet, the “Krispy Kreme Krazy Dayz” diet, or the “Hershey’s Syrup” liquid diet. So, just because someone claims to be on a diet, that does not mean she is going about it the right way. If you lack this knowledge, go get it by reading an unbiased diet book, browsing the internet, talking to friends and professionals, or finding information wherever you can. Once you’ve done that, you can leapfrog over even more alleged dieters.
My last problem with the “Statistic of Fear and Doom” (as I call the 95% failure statistic) is that many of those people trying to lose weight have probably given up after the first few tries. Back in the 1980′s, I had a few roommates who each wanted to lose over twenty pounds. They seemed to take special care in planning their diets, setting goals, and motivating themselves. I wished them success and hoped they could help spur me on to lose weight as well. But after only five weeks, they decided that it was too hard, and they went straight back to their world of pizza and beer. Five weeks is not enough time, and they didn’t even want to analyze what went wrong (though I can tell you it was just more pizza and beer). You can easily leapfrog over these people who give up with barely a fight.
If you promise not to give up, I’ll promise that you have a much better chance to succeed. I almost gave up a few times myself. I put myself under so much stress during college that I decided that I couldn’t afford to worry about my weight. I was too worried about getting “good,” grades so I could get a “good,” job, a “good,” wife, a “good,” house, some “good,” promotions and a “good,” retirement package.

My message to you is that you shouldn’t give up on your diet or yourself. The statistics are not as bad as they seem if you are really serious about learning the nuts and bolts of dieting. Please realize that if you work hard, learn about nutrition and diets, and don’t ever give up, you are miles ahead of those other dieters. Now go lose some weight so I can tell the world that I helped somebody today.

Moreover, the overall rates of obesity increased in 23 states and decreased in none. US heart disease statistics are some of the worst (if not the worst) in the world, with over one million reported heart attack and half a million deaths annually. Our diets tend to be a big part of the problem with lots of red meat, high saturated fat foods deep fried to perfection, along with a healthy dose of those tasty fast food delights thrown in for good measure. Not only do these types of foods add a few pounds but create an environment inside our bodies ripe for coronary artery disease. The US heart disease statistics compiled by the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia tend to tell the story better than I could ever hope to. Let’s take a few minutes to run through a number of chilling US heart disease statistics that you should find very interesting.

First, did you know that heart disease was the leading cause of death for most ethnic groups in the United States? Here’s how the numbers stack up: Whites 27.5%; African Americans 25.8%; Hispanics 22.7%; Other 24%. According to these numbers the average American has a 1 in 4 chance of dying of a heart attack. Now that should make all of us think twice before ordering that double burger with fries along with a fried pie or milk shake for dessert for lunch, and that chicken fried steak with gravy for dinner!

This is a major concern for the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) in America and the WHO (World Health Organization) because childhood obesity statistics show that obese children and especially those in the teenage years have a 70% chance of being obese as adults. What is worse is that percentage increases to 80% if either one or both of the parents are obese as well.

This is a major concern because obesity is the cause of many major health concerns later in life. This does not only affect the person themselves, but those who love them and society in general as this causes health insurance to rise and eventually decreases the number of people who are fit to work, thus putting a strain on the economy. This article will present the results of research on obesity, and childhood obesity facts and obesity statistics.

In 2004, there was a research report written about a study that lasted from 1999 to 2002 entitled “Prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents: United States” conducted by the CDC. According to that report “16 % children (over 9 million) 6-19 year olds are overweight or obese” this is three times what it was in 1980. In addition, this report brings out the fact that also during this same time period an additional 15% were “at risk of becoming overweight”.

Not only has this number tripled, but in the past three decades (according to this same study) obesity has “more than doubled” in both children and adolescents from ages 2-5 and also ages 12-19 while more than tripling in children between the ages of 6-11.

Health Costs – Our children are paying dearly and at their young age are not realizing this. Type 2 Diabetes has risen from 4% new cases seen in the pre-1990′s to between 8-45% during the 1990′s. In addition the incidence of a single risk factor for heart disease has also risen to nearly 60% of children between the ages of 5 and 10 years old who are obese. Not only that, but those with at least 2 risk factors has also risen to 25%. Some of these risk factors are those that generally we associate with the elderly, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides. These children are having diseases at 5 and 10 years old that in the past took decades to get.

However, this problem is not only an “American” problem where we need to look shamefacedly at the other nations of the world when this subject is brought up. Other nation’s rates of obesity have also risen and I think it safe to assume that some of those statistics also represent obesity in children.

Some of the other nations that have a higher rate of obesity and should also be staring at their stomach’s instead of their toes are Samoa has the highest worldwide with a 74% of obesity compared to that of America’s 34% and China’s 2%. These particular statistics represent the high, mid-range and the low rate of obesity per nation. These statistics come from International Obesity Task Force, WHO figures 2002.

Why are these children suffering as if they have been eating and assaulting their bodies for decades when in reality they have been alive for only 5 or 10 years? Not only is it what we have been feeding our kids and what they have demanded at times, but it is also the lack of exercise, not only in the schools, but also after school at home. You know the scenario, you’re sitting with your friend when her kids come home and they begin to fight over it. They are yelling and screaming, demanding that it is their turn to use whatever mechanical device may have just rolled off the shelves at the nearest Wal-mart ® or other store. These devices range from DVD players, to video games, to the latest video or other fantastic toy that has become number one on the ratings list.

We ourselves are at fault for what is happening to our children. Some of them are too young to even know better, so it is up to us to watch what our children are eating and how much exercise they are getting.

Back in 1999 they said that if obesity continued to be a sure problem it was predicted that it would reach epidemic levels by the year 2020. So I don’t know what happened!! The obesity statistics in the western world is also increasing at an alarming rate. Back in 1999 people thought that if obesity continued to be a complex problem it was anticipated that it would reach epidemic levels by the year 2020. So I don’t know what went wrong!!
