Sodium Lauryl Sulphate: a Reason to Get all Lathered up

January 3, 2011
By

Did you ever take the time to view the list of ingredients on your shampoos, soaps, and toothpaste? If not, you might be very surprised to learn that they almost certainly share the ingredient Sodium Laurel Sulfate. And if you are having a hard time imagining what you could be useful in cleaning your hair that is also useful in cleaning your teeth – not to mention the grease spots in garages, by the way – then you really need to read about Sodium Laurel Sulfate.

SLS, as it is known in the industry, is one of the ingredients most common in not only personal care products but industrial strength grease removers. If that doesn’t alarm you, it should. The corrosive nature of SLS does make it an excellent grease remover, but just how greasy are your hair and skin? Almost certainly not enough to warrant constant exposure to SLS! SLS, in fact, is the most toxic of all the substances you will find in soaps, shampoos, and other personal care products. So why is it used?

Sodium Laurel Sulfate is used simply because of its foaming properties. Manufacturers know that we all love the feeling of a nice rich lather on our hair or skin, or even from our toothpastes, and SLS is their way of providing the lather as cheaply as possible. But what is SLS doing besides raising a lather?

It is decreasing the rate of your hair growth, or even promoting hair loss. It is drying your skin, or even causing eczema. It is possibly accounting for your mysterious skin rashes, scalp scarring, and eye problems. In spite of all those harmful effects, Sodium Laurel Sulfate is still present in nine of every ten foaming products being sold today!

But that’s not all. When used on children, Sodium Laurel Sulfate may be absorbed into their eyes, damaging their development. Because it breaks down into nitrates, SLS can react badly with other skin care items; and nitrates are related to an increased risk of cancer. But the worst aspect of being exposed to SLS is that it accumulates in the body, where it can build up in the liver, heart, lungs, and even brain. It will also weaken the immune system. Carcinogenic, damaging to the eyes, hair follicles, organs, and the skin which so readily absorbs it–and yet it completely pervades the personal care market!

Had enough? Then start examining every ingredient on your personal care products and pass on any which contain SLS. Its use benefits no one but the manufacturers who are trying to boost their profits at your expense, but unless enough consumers wise up and stop gong along, it will remain in nearly all the foaming products being sold.

You can get the SLS out of your home and life today by simply switching to organic personal care. Your skin will be absorbing their nutrients and hydrating compounds, instead of toxic SLS. How difficult a choice is that?

Golf Is A Good Reason To Stay Fit

Remember that old joke from the 70’s about the kid that walked up to the pro golfer who lit up a cigarette on the course? The kid said, “Hey mister, you’re an athlete. How can you smoke?” The pro golfer replied, “Kid, I ain’t no athlete. I’m a golfer.”

It’s amazing how the times have changed. The golf game today is comprised of true world-class athletes that train year-round vigorously on their chosen sport. In addition, amateur golfers serious about their game have incorporated rigorous golf fitness routines as part of their practice regimen. But what about casual golfers? Can they too benefit from playing golf? The answer is a resounding yes and golf helps provide many health benefits that may surprise you. Consider that:

• During an average round of regulation golf, a golfer who walks the course walks about five miles and burns about 350 calories an hour. So for a typical round of golf (about 4.5 hours), golf helps burn well over 1,500 calories. Of course, if your ride in a cart, this could have a big impact on your calorie burn, but it is reasonable to assume that golf helps even riders burn between 200 and 400 calories per round, about the same range as 20 to 40 minutes on a treadmill (which isn’t nearly as fun).

• In addition to walking the course, golf helps encourage golfers to incorporate regular cardiovascular exercise into their golf practice regimen including walking, treadmill, biking and/or running.

• When you practice your game, golf helps you to burn between 150 and 500 calories an hour depending on the rigor you approach your practice sessions.

• Golf helps work virtually every aspect of the body (especially if you are walking) including the back, arms, shoulders, legs and especially the abs and oblique muscles.

• Golf is relatively less stressful on the body than more intense sports like tennis and can be enjoyed well into the later stages of life.

• Golf helps you mentally as well as it can challenging and tax your mental agility, while it can also be quite relaxing depending on your mindset.

So, enjoy golf and its benefits. Golf helps you physically and mentally. Just don’t light up that cigarette.

The Reason Behind Why You Are Falling Sick…

Do you know that half of all these illnesses are estimated to be caused by common household dust – the germs and bacteria in dust?

Our air contains of tons of impurities. A study has found on that on average, there are 35 toxic industrial chemicals that are legal in products but have shown to cause many health problems in humans or test animals.

Another study conducted by the scientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health found out that an increase of 20 micro grams of airborne particulate matter would lead to a 1 percent rise in death rate.

Each year, as many as 60,000 Americans actually die due to lung diseases, heart conditions and even other health problems caused by breathing in these impurities according to Natural Resources Defense Council.

During the day, when we breathe in these impurities, our human body would usually expunge these impurities by sneezing, coughing, or even through sweating out these impurities.

However, when we are sleeping during the night, the impurities would enter our body as our ability to expunge these impurities is reduced.

These toxins would then accumulate in parts of our body like our wind pipes, lungs, and all the way into our stomach. Imagine all these chemicals or toxins accumulated in our body on a daily basis would actually cause serious health problems.

If you do not detoxify your body on a frequent basis, your health can be at stake!

There is a simple routine that you can perform everyday to flush your body of all these daily impurities that enter your body every day. The Asian masters have long ago taught this method to their students to help them keep their body strong and healthy.

If you do not know, the Asians have strong health beliefs that breathing the right way is one of the most important aspects that separate a healthy or an unhealthy body. Through the proper breathing, the Asian masters can find out which part of your body needs attention. And that is the reason why Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong has benefited the people from all over the world.

Think about it, when all these impurities entered your lungs, wind pipes, stomach during the night, there is nothing much the normal doctors can do much about it. They will only be able to treat your illnesses when symptoms of illnesses or diseases started to surface. And by the time these illnesses or diseases surfaced, imagine how much damage has already be done to your body.

On the other hand, the Asian masters believe to cure the illnesses or diseases from the root and instead of just curing the symptoms. The normal doctor would usually prescribe you the medicine to treat the symptoms surfacing from your body. Hence the medicine prescribed to you usually cures your body temporarily.

By following this simple method on a daily basis, the Asians who used it feel more energy, a better digestion, and less prone to illnesses and diseases.

The One Reason why Nutrition is so Important

May 21, 2010
By

There are very many ways that we can obtain a good healthy nutritional diet, so we should be able to find a way that suits our own circumstances. And we all have to eat and drink to live!

So if we all have to eat and drink to live, why not make a real effort to improve the quality of our lives? It is not as if we have to do something extra. We simply have to do what we always do, but we just need to do it a little bit better each day. We do this by considering the nutritional value of our food and drink and making a serious effort to improve.

So if make the effort to eat food with real nutritional value, where would we be in 2 months time? If we keep going for 6 months, where would we be in 6 months time? If we can keep going for a whole year, we may be in a completely new place in comparison to today.

Now if we just make small but significant changes with the nutritional value of the food we eat, and do it for long enough, we can make good progress in avoiding health problems associated with food with low nutritional value.

Even if we only learn what to avoid, we are still making progress in the right direction. We are one step closer and this is why nutrition is so important to us.

It is not rocket science! The difference between eating food with real nutritional value, in comparison to eating food with minimal nutritional value is simply a matter of taking more care with the food and drink we buy. We gain more energy and feel better for our efforts.

Our bodies are quite remarkable – we can punish them endlessly and they still keep going. They may not function as well as they used to, but they still carry on compensating for all the punishment that is thrown at them.

Why do people with higher incomes live longer? They are simply eating better quality food. We don’t need a high income to learn from this and benefit ourselves. We just need to do sufficient exercise and take care with the nutritional content of our food and drink.

Are you ready to learn how to improve your own nutrition in order raise your nutritional intake to a higher level.

“Whatever Happens, Happens For A Reason” True or False…Ch 3

The guy whose hand was on hers was downright handsome; there was no other way to describe him. He was tall and had black hair with magnificent black eyes. He was built which told her that he was a regular visitor of gym. But he was not overly built with muscles bulging out of his sleeves nor was his T shirt that skin tight Neha hated. He was easy to look at, and the way his lips were curving she knew he would be easy to smile also. The way she was measuring her, even he was looking at her and by the look of his she knew he also measuring her. Then she remembered the guy who had tried to feel her and all the other girls at the queue for public call, even he didn’t look any strange but he was good looking and easy going just like one standing right now in front of her. And she frantically looked inside and pushing past him she went inside, her heart was beating faster. She went in and crouched in from of the small girl and hugged her, she knew this type of perverts who liked little girls. She started shaking with anger and she wanted to hurt him.

“You should be ashamed of yourself, what you thought you will be alone here and no one will know” Neha couldn’t stop herself, that guy’s mouth hung open when she started.

“All men are same but don’t you get enough girls of your age that you had to come after this small girl also, in this bad situation also you can think of only one thing, you know guys like you shouldn’t be allowed to…
She was stopped abruptly when that guy raised his hand and she was forced to stop in between well she was not finished.

“Wait a damn minute who do you think you are of accusing me of anything? Was I doing something wrong? Did you see me sneaking in the bus? How can you just assume and just start blaming me” He said that with a controlled anger which Neha envied, he didn’t raise his voice but it had his anger shown.

“How can you assume things you want for anyone?” He wanted continue shouting at me Neha thought but as he glanced at the small girl she looked more frightened after both parties shouting.

Neha could see the way he was controlling his anger for the small girl’s sake and that made her realise that she also shouldn’t have said anything in front of the girl as she was already frightened. She realised her mistake. The small girl was looking at the guy he crouched down to her level and looked only at the small girl who was still in Neha’s arms. But Neha looked at the guy and loosened her grip on the girl so she was facing the guy.

“Hi, My name is Abhishek I saw you from the platform and thought you could come with us. Sorry I was shouting but don’t worry we were not angry at you, we grown people tend to fight. But I am sorry we scared you, so sweet heart what’s your name?”

He had a beautiful voice when he wasn’t shouting that’s what Neha thought, it was soothing the same way her mom would talk to her to explain something when she was being stubborn. The small girl was relaxing by his tone and was now less tensed. Neha saw the girl expending her small hand towards Abhishek and said in a tiny voice.

“My name is Ayesha. I am in senior KG” She said this in a small voice and shaked hand with Abhishek like an adult. Neha was looking at the exchange between the small girl and Abhishek, she started feeling guilty for her temper. She should have asked that guy calmly before throwing her temper, but when she was angry she forgot everything but that doesn’t mean she should have said those terrible things to the guy. Her mom had always told her to think before saying anything but now to remember that advice was late.

Neha knew she had to apologize but she needed time and they had to think of Ayesha first, so she turned Ayesha towards her and introduced herself.

“Hi Ayesha, My name is Neha I had also noticed you from the platform and we came to see you. You can tell us where is your home? But that can wait we need to reach the platform then you can tell us the story. So take your things.”

Aysha nodded in understanding and then went for backpack in the bus and Neha stood awkwardly in silence with Abhishek. She knew she had to apologize to him and instead of waiting she thought of doing it now.

“I am sorry I misunderstood and started yelling at you, I should have asked before assuming things.” She started and looked at him. He was standing with his hands folded and for several moments he just looked at her and then when Ayesha came with her back pack he curtly said “Let’s go”.

That arrogant prick he couldn’t even acknowledge that she had said sorry to him. Well she also won’t talk to him, she had made a mistake and she acknowledged it, couldn’t he even say that it was okay or at least accept that she had said sorry. He just looked at her and left the bus expecting her to follow after him, she did that only couldn’t even he nod when she had said sorry. Neha was never ashamed of saying sorry, if she made a mistake there was no harm in accepting it. But this was first time she was brushed off; seething in her rage she went after Abishek and Alisha.

*****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Abhishek was very angry no one had ever made so disgusting suggestion about his character, when he had seen the girl he was admiring her. Remembering the first time he had seen her first thing he had noticed was her beautiful chocolate brown eyes which were so dark if not seen closely could be mistaken for black. She had an oval shaped face along with long eyelashes and the rest he wanted to see but then only she had started accusing him. After he had given his reaction she was feeling guilty and even said sorry which he admired as not so many people could admit they made a mistake. But his ego was bruised not badly but it needled him that she chose to believe the worst of him. He knew he was good looking and girls like him and he also knew that he might not be liked by some people. But this Neha’s assumption on his character was so disgusting, that’s why he ignored her apology.

He and Ayesha came out of the bus and he scooped Ayesha in his arms as water level was rising and rain had not stopped. He checked his watch, it was 5:30 in the evening but it was still very dark. He looked beyond the bus they still had to cross the road and go towards the platform. Alone he had come towards the bus without a thought but now he had a small girl and Neha. He wanted turn and see if she was coming, well she would as she won’t stay in the bus alone.

“Neha didi, you are not coming?” Ayesha asked in her small voice. “Yes, Ayesha I am also coming, don’t worry” Neha replied to her and Abhishek sensed her coming and standing next to him. He knew she was angry at him for brushing her off, in small corner guilt was growing but he closed it. They started walking in the water in the rain and Neha was holding her bag on top of Ayesha’s head to save her from rain. They were walking side by side slowly and he turned to look at her, she was wet when he had seen her before and he was transfixed at her face only now he was looking at her apart from her face. She was slim but not the bony types nor was she plump. Just right and she had thick black hair till her mid spine but it was tied down in a braid. She was a no nonsense girl with simple jewelery and no makeup, none at all. He was still looking at her trying to come up with flaws as he didn’t want to like her but his eyes could appreciate what they were seeing. He had seen the most beautiful girl around him, the most fashionable in comparison she was too simple. And he realized that’s why he was so transfixed as she was naturally and simply beautiful and not because she had visited saloon to look beautiful. Suddenly sensing his gaze she stared back at him and there was awareness and electricity there in between both of them. He had his share of girl friends and he knew girls liked him but he had never felt this sizzling need to touch someone but he didn’t act on the feeling, he was afraid of the outcome of touching her. While he was looking at her he missed one step and was about to fall but Neha saved him and Ayesha by holding him steady with her hand. The sizzle he had feared came to be true and knew even she felt it as she removed her hand as soon as he was balanced on his feet as if she was burned by touching him.

“What is happening Abhishek dada*?” Ayesha asked innocently. Well even Abhishek didn’t know answer to that as he looked at Neha.

*dada – means brother in marathi

Yet Another Reason For Women to Opt For Weight Loss Surgery

May 13, 2010
By

If you are a woman struggling with weight issues and want to start a family, weight loss surgery has an additional benefit for you. It would now have a positive effect on not only on your personal health but also the health of your unborn child. Sounds like a fantastic tale? It’s a fact, ladies.

Dr John Kral of SUNY Downtown Medical Centre in Brooklyn, N.Y. and co-author of the study revealed that their study confirmed previous research showing that the intrauterine environment might be far more important than genes and the post-natal environment when it came to the association between maternal obesity and childhood obesity.

The procedure of biliopancreatic diversion, a popular surgery for weight loss, changes the standard process of digestion. It makes stomach smaller to control the food intake and ensures that food bypasses part of small intestine which results in fewer calories getting absorbed.

In other words, weight-loss operation lessens the amount of food a person can eat and keeps a check on the amount of food that can be digested to reduce calorie intake.

It’s a proven fact that obesity and its co-morbidities can be transmitted to kids from obese moms which is an indication that the intrauterine environment is determining factor whether a child is destined to become obese. Under such circumstances, it becomes important that if you are planning a child, weight loss should rank very high on your list of ‘must do things’. By losing weight, you not only improve your own health but improve the quality of your unborn child as well.

Kral said, “For those women interested in both surgical treatment and having children, we believe surgery should come first. Preventing obesity and treating it effectively in young women could prevent further transmission to future generations.”

Best part is if you opt to lose weight by any mean including weight loss surgery, your baby will have lower birth weight and waist circumference and his chances of becoming obese are much less. Your child will enjoy reduced insulin resistance and lower cholesterol.

Kral was absolutely right when he said, “Any medical or surgical treatment to reduce obesity and existing metabolic disorders before pregnancy can be an investment in the life of future offspring.”

Christmas: The Real Reason for the Season

May 10, 2010
By

For almost 1600 years, millions of people around the world have been taught that “Christmas” represents the true birthday of the Jewish messiah and Son of God, Jesus Christ. But does Christmas really represent Jesus’s birthday?

Before it was deemed “Christmas” and the birthday of Jesus Christ, the period of the winter solstice – ending on December 25th – was celebrated in various countries as the birth of the sun, who was considered a god in these many places.

The Christian celebration of “Christmas” was only formalized in the middle of the fifth century (450 AD/CE), when Emperor Julius I “assimilated the festival with that of the birth of Mithra (December 25), in order to facilitate the more complete Christianisation of the empire.” Until that time, December 25th had been the birthday of Sol Invictus or the “Unconquered Sun,” established as such by Emperor Aurelian in 274 AD/CE.

Concerning the origins of the solar holiday of December 25th vis-à-vis Christianity, the Catholic Encyclopedia (“Christmas”) states:

“The earliest rapprochement of the births of Christ and the sun is in [the writings of early Church father] Cyprian [200-258]…’O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born…Christ should be born.’

“In the fourth century, [Church father] Chrysostom…says: …”But Our Lord, too, is born in the month of December…the eighth before the calends of January [25 December]…, But they call it the ‘Birthday of the Unconquered’. Who indeed is so unconquered as Our Lord…? Or, if they say that it is the birthday of the Sun, He is the Sun of Justice.”

As we can see from these remarks, the birth of Christ at the winter solstice has been asserted since as early as the third century. Moreover, the reason for this birthdate is clearly given: This date represents “the birthday of the Sun!”

Before that time, the winter solstice was also celebrated in many other places, including in Egypt, where the baby sun god Horus was brought out in a manger for display. Concerning winter-solstice “Feasts and Festivals,” the Encyclopedia Britannica reports, “The common people in China have a similar custom on the arrival of the winter solstice…” The Encyclopedia Britannica also names several other cultures as having winter celebrations, including the Mexicans and Peruvians. Even the Jews had their winter holiday, or “Feast of the Dedication,” as mentioned in the New Testament at John 10:22. The winter solstice in Latin is called “bruma,” serving as one source of the Roman celebration called “the Brumalia.” There was also the December festival of Saturnalia in the Roman Empire, which ended at the winter solstice.

December 25th actually represents the end of the three-day period or triduum of the winter solstice, which begins at midnight on December 21st or the morning of December 22nd and ends at midnight on December 24th – “Christmas Eve” – or the morning of December 25th. This time represents the shortest days of the year, when the sun appears to be “dying.” Thus, when the days start to lengthen again, the sun seems to have been “born,” “reborn” or “resurrected.” Hence, December 25th is the birthday of the sun!
