Sourcing Apparel in the Next Decade

Everyone wears clothes and the fashion business is about a $1-Trillion a year industry. All of these clothes need to get sourced to manufacturers somewhere, somehow. Sourcing has been at the heart of the business since the dawn of the business. 2010 is coming to a close and we are about to enter into the next ten years of the new century. What has changed since 1999 in the sourcing business?

A lot.

First of all, go back in your mind to 1999. We were all worried about something called Y2K, Prince seemed almost prophetic, and technology still seemed fresh. There was not the completely ubiquitous use of technology strapped to your hand 24/7 like there is today. People ate lunch without checking a social network or their email every 3 minutes.

Sourcing back then involved a lot of faxes, lots of samples, lots of printing, and email was starting to become heavy. But online communications even ten years ago wasn’t anywhere near to what it is today. Sourcing today can harness technology that you couldn’t (or didn’t) even fathom only 10 years ago while you were listening to the remake of Lady Marmalade.

Today you have an almost instant capability of discovering new sources of manufacturing online. You have the ability to source apparel online, to get art boards and techpacks made online, consolidate trend information, and the ability to communicate and engage with your factories online like never before. Back in 2001, you still sort of had to do a lot of your digital stuff manually.

Today you can just upload a techpack to an online platform on one end of the world and a factory on the other side can instantly see your work and respond to your needs – from pricing to sampling to design updating on the fly almost.

What will the next 10 years bring for those in the apparel sourcing business?

Plenty.

First, you will see a consolidation of supplier bases both on the brand level and the country level. On the brand level, sourcing managers are going to want less sources but better relationships, performance, creativity, and security from those sources. Brands that have 400 factories are going to want 200 factories. Those with 20 factories are likely going to want only 10 or 15. Why? It’s just easier to deal with and manage tighter supply chains and smaller stables of suppliers. With all of the compliance issues and sustainability concerns, this even makes it more of a reason to consolidate.

We are going to see more countries that want to get production business from the Buyers start to build more clusters of factories in key cities. Regional governments and industry from Vietnam to Colombia will set up and strengthen the “clusters” of manufacturing they offer as they compete for production business. Different kinds of factories will physically consolidate geographically close to one another so that sourcing managers that need a variety of production (knits, wovens, hosiery, outerwear headwear etc..) will be able to more easily manage everything. It’s hard on a sourcing director at a brand when they have to make one product in China another in Peru and another in Turkey. Brands will start to look for ways to consolidate their go-to manufacturing base in tighter regions worldwide.

Lastly, we will see more sourcing managers utilizing the web for their sourcing activities. These are people that move around the world a lot. Having the ability to go from ideation to trends to designing to techpacks to sourcing to ordering to shipping to delivery to retailer more efficiently represents huge costs savings and agility to respond to trends. Web-based interaction will become more much more important for textile sourcing professionals as the most logical way for them to manage all of these spinning dishes. The novelty of the web is over for textiles supply chain management; the utilization of the web for sourcing people now will go full force in the next decade.

The best way to find out is to ask your spouse if anything is going on. Of course, whether or not there is something going on, your spouse will likely deny the possibility. That’s okay: what you are looking for is HOW they react to what you say. If they act genuinely hurt and upset, you may have gotten things totally wrong. However, if they try to change the subject or brush it off, an affair is likely.

2. Get them to admit that there is a problem:

If you do believe there is an affair going on, the next thing to do is to get your husband or wife to confess to it. You may not ever get them to actually say they are cheating on you, but if you continue with the right kinds of questions, you are likely to unearth any of the inappropriate behaviors he or she is engaged in. It is important to get their admission that something not healthy for your relationship is going on.

3. Make sure you define cheating in the broadest-possible sense:

Remember, even if your spouse has not actually had sex with another person, they may still be involved in an emotional affair. So, make sure that when you talk to your spouse you define the term broadly enough so that they do not get defensive and clam up. The goal should be to keep them talking.

4. Decide whether you can commit to healing the relationship:

If you do get your spouse to admit that an affair of some sort is going on, you will probably be very angry, sad, hurt, or all of the above. Those feelings are totally natural. And yet, at this point, you need to keep your emotions in check. Right now, you need to decide in your heart whether you can commit to healing the problems that caused the infidelity or not.

5. Decide whether getting counseling makes sense:

If you and your spouse do decide to work on your problems together, consider going to a professional counselor. Also, do your research to find advice that can help you survive your affair and get back to a health place in your lives again.

Next Pope is Set to Be Another Conservative

It is a question being asked with ever greater urgency in the upper echelons of the Roman Catholic hierarchy: to what extent will Pope John Paul II’s legacy to the church be a clone of himself?

As the world watches the pain-racked pontiff’s superhuman attempts to remain as spiritual head of more than a billion Christians, his most loyal lieutenants are closing ranks to ensure that his conservative philosophy continues to hold sway. A cabal of aides, some of whom have been with him since his earliest days, guard access to the Pope’s apartment and disseminate the line that the pointiff is still very much in charge. A handful of spiritual allies fulfil his duties during Easter week and help stage-manage his brief appearances.

The pontiff’s inability to attend any of the Holy Week events has given them an added poignancy that has invited comparisons with the suffering of Christ. ‘It’s obvious that the Pope is carrying a very heavy cross indeed, and he is giving a marvellous example of patience in the face of suffering,’ said US Archbishop John Foley.

But the Pope’s suffering has prompted speculation over the direction in which his successor will take the church. As pressure mounts for a modernising Pope – prepared to brook discussion on female priests, celibacy and contraception – conservatives are battling to keep their authority. They want to preserve the centralised structure established by John Paul II.

The conservatives know they have statistics on their side. The fact that 97 per cent of the 120 cardinals who will be eligible to vote for the pontiff’s successor were appointed by John Paul II himself makes it almost inconceivable that a moderniser will become the next Pope.

They were also reassured by the Pope’s recent decision to entrust the German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, a hardline conservative, with composing this year’s Good Friday meditation. Ratzinger is head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the church’s chief think tank, which has dominated discussions on sexual morality and birth control, and prevented liberals from gaining ground.

‘Christ suffers in his own church,’ Ratzinger wrote in the meditations, which were approved by John Paul II. Ratzinger used the meditations to describe the ‘falling of many Christians away from Christ into a godless secularism’, which some have taken as a reference to the church’s need to emphasise its conservative values in a modern age.

Ratzinger, 78, is one of the few members of John Paul II’s inner circle considered ‘papabile’ – a cardinal who could become the next Pope – but he is viewed as a long shot.

Claims about who will succeed should be treated with caution. In 1978, the year John Paul II was elected, a book entitled Which Pope? came out, listing the favourites with no mention of John Paul II.

Nevertheless, the smart money is going on the College of Cardinals appointing the first ‘third-world Pope’, chiefly as a response to shifting demographics within the church. Since John Paul II became Pope, the church in the northern hemisphere has lost followers while the south has gained. Today nearly 65 per cent of Catholics live in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

With the college’s inherent bias firmly stacked in favour of cardinals from the southern hemisphere, Vatican watchers believe the most likely candidate will be Cardinal Francis Arinze, 72, of Nigeria. He would be the first black African pontiff since Gelasius I (492-496). Arinze is said to take a hardline position on abortion and contraception and denounces homosexuality. Other third world favourites are Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez, 62, from Honduras, who teamed up with Bono to campaign against third world debt, and Cardinal Claudio Hummes of Brazil.

However, some senior members of the hierarchy fear that, with Christianity’s influence on the wane in the West, there is a powerful need for a European Pope to be appointed to arrest decline.

One name mentioned is 71-year-old Cardinal Godfried Danneels of Brussels, but he is thought too liberal. Meanwhile, the more conservative members of the European camp admire 58-year-old Cardinal Christoph Schonborn of Vienna. Schonborn, though, suffers from his relative youth. John Paul II has served more than double the length of time of the average papacy, and the cardinals believe the next Pope should not be in the role for so long. The present Pope’s longevity has meant he has been able to shore up his power base by surrounding himself with the like-minded.

It has meant that, even when his health has been ravaged by Parkinson’s and related breathing problems, the Pope’s position has been unassailable, his invisible hold over the church, if anything, strengthened by his suffering.

‘What’s important in my mind is to see that the church functions. Nothing has stopped,’ said André Vingt-Trois, the Archbishop of Paris, emphasising that the Pope is still very much in charge. Indeed he is. Regardless of who succeeds him, long after John Paul II has died, his influence will linger.

Create A Fun And Easy Children's Travel Kit For Your Next Trip

What I discovered shortly after having my son is that road trips and travel soon became much more complex. Between the boredom and the frequent potty breaks, what once used to be a relaxing opportunity to chat with my significant other, read or listen to music, became a sometimes stressful and exhausting experience! And, with parents and in-laws in two different states from us, not traveling was not an option!

The solution to my travel woes… I created a fun travel kit for my son which he looks forward to using on every trip. I won’t guarantee that this will keep your child completely occupied the entire trip, but it sure does help.

First, if your child is old enough, he/she can help in creating the container for the kit itself. We had fun at my house using puffy paint to decorate a canvas tote bag to store the contents of the travel kit. You could also use paint markers to decorate an acrylic storage case! Get creative…the only requirements for the container is that it be durable, big enough to hold the contents but not too big for limited car space.

In terms of the contents of the case, use your best judgment in determining age-appropriateness. Here are the contents I suggest:

• Crayons and pencils. Here is a tip – you can save the small packs of crayons you receive when going to restaurants. Pencils are obviously not a good option for small children!

• Small activity books. Again, save the activity books you receive from restaurants. You can also create a customized activity book by printing off free printables from the Internet. See kidprintables.com.

• A printable map of the United States. You can use this to talk to your child about where you are traveling. Have your child color in the states they have visited.

• A postcard kit. Encourage your child to send postcards to family members and friends about their travels. You can either include blank postcards, collect postcards from the various places you visit, or purchase a postcard kit. Make sure to bring addresses and stamps! Fun idea…as a child, I collected post cards from all of the places I visited and store them in a binder. It was a great way to remember all of our fun family times!

• Create your own license plate game. Print out a chart with all of the states in the U.S. Have your child check off each state as they find cars with the appropriate license plate.

• Notepads & stickers. Children love to write on notepads and decorate them with stickers.

• Crafts. Bring along a small non-messy craft that your child can do in the car. Do an internet search for craft ideas or visit orientaltrading.com for some inexpensive craft kits.

• Dry snacks…think goldfish, fruit chews, granola bars, etc.

Final tip…use your creativity when creating your child’s travel kit and get their input on activities they would enjoy!
