South Africa Survive Unscathed Until Lunch But Still in Big Trouble

January 21, 2011
By

Chasing a world record 547 to win, South Africa were staring down the barrel of a 2-0 series defeat against Australia despite reaching 35-0 at lunch on the fourth day of the second Test in Durban.

The tourists, out to protect their No1 world Test ranking, declared at 331-5 this morning after resuming at 292-3.

Phillip Hughes, the youngest player to notch centuries in both innings of a Test, was dismissed for an extravagant 160.

He reached his maiden 150 with a six off Dale Steyn and in the next over he flat-batted Makhaya Ntini, tennis-style, through mid-off for a boundary.

In a swashbuckling knock, the 20-year-old Phillips ran out of luck when he was caught by Morne Morkel on the third-man boundary.

Captain Ricky Ponting called an end to the innings when Marcus North was caught at slip for a duck.

South Africa survived until the interval without losing a wicket but rain still looks their only hope of salvaging this Test.

Neil McKenzie, on three, was given out lbw but the decision was overruled on appeal.

In the absence of the injured captain Graeme Smith (broken hand), Hamish Amla opened the innings and struck all-rounder Andrew McDonald for three successive fours in the last over before lunch.

Ravi Bopara and Graeme Swann Punish Lacklustre West Indies Before Lunch

January 14, 2011
By

England had the better of the opening session against a strangely subdued-looking West Indies side this morning. Perhaps the West Indies were put off by the blustery chill of early May. Or they might have had a hangover from the opening day when they fluffed the final session after doing so well in the first two.

The ball did not swing in the first hour. But with the new ball in his hand it was surprising that Fidel Edwards, the most dangerous of their fast men, bowled to the tail-ender, Graeme Swann, with only one slip in place and a ring of fielders protecting the boundary.

The players came off for bad light after five overs at 11.25 but the break was only a short one and the overnight pair of Ravi Bopara and Swann rattled along at more than five runs an over.

The only wicket to fall in the two hours was that of Bopara, who followed a delivery that did swing and looped it straight to extra cover. The partnership had been worth 93 runs from 131 balls.

Jimmy Anderson, who may already have felt giddy at being promoted to No 10 in the order, was struck on the back of the head by Edwards just before lunch, when England, who had resumed on 289-7, were 377-8, with Swann unbeaten on 63.

Let Your Creativity Enhance Your Christmas Lunch

Let Your Creativity Enhance Your Christmas Lunch

This Christmas have an outdoor lunch that is in sync with the general mood of conserving nature. Enhance the natural experience and do your bit for the environment without compromising on the beauty and décor of the venue.

Follow these tips to make the most of the surroundings and get showered with compliments. All you need is to enhance the existing stuffs while playing with your grey matter.

Bling Bling

Make a canopy out of your old Indian saris collection as the zari will enhance the afternoon rendezvous. You can use old zari sarees like your mother’s wedding Benarasi sarees. Even the sequined bright colored sarees will be another ideal option. Spanning from the net to heavy silk ones, all you need is to use your mother’s old zari saris.

Not of Indian origin? Just hop into your nearest Indian friend’s house – she will be too happy to oblige you with her best saris.

Fabric Paintings

After putting the curtains or veils around, you can get it painted. If the color of the curtains too dull for the natural surroundings, go ahead and add a dash of color with fabric paintings.

You can get the same done on the bedspread and cushion covers for the divan too. The fabric paint should be of good quality as there are chances of ruining the cloth with poor quality stuff.

Crockery Matters

If you are taking so much pain for the decoration, do pay attention to minute details of the crockery aspect too. Try to add color to lunching experience.

Go for bright colored crockery set instead of the standard pale white ones. Bright colored crockery adds to the fun of an outdoor party.

This Christmas do not behave like a Puritan – rather go ahead with inventions.

Mirror Time

You can get small sized mirror work done on the curtains, table cloth etc. The idea is to look quite similar to the theme of Seesha (glass) parties in Dubai.

While selecting the designs, keep in mind your requirements. For lighter fabric like chiffon or net, heavy work can be recommended provided the fabric doesn’t get torn. Vice versa for the heavier fabrics.

Table Décor

Keeping up with the festive mood of the Christmas, try an assortment of allium with kaffier lilies and Ireland bells to enhance the dinner table décor. Keep the flower arrangement neat and colorful in order to keep up with the Christmas mood.

Flower Arrangements

Since the Christmas lunch is outdoors, go for flower decoration in all spheres possible. You can put sisals of pink orchids on the hemline of the canopy boundaries.

Go ahead and host a swell lunch this Christmas!

Lunch With Rupert Not to Everyone’s Taste

Five days into a week-long auction on eBay, there appears to be less appetite than expected for the offer of lunch with the world’s most powerful media mogul, Rupert Murdoch.

The unprecedented charity auction, offering chance to dine with the News Corporation chairman and chief executive, has raised just £57 more than the reserve price with just two days left to go.

The auction, in aid of the Jerusalem College of Technology, has a reserve of $25,000 (£14,000) and has attracted only two bidders. The first bid is for the reserve price and the second, from a “Norman Rentrop”, offers just $100 (£57) more.

The bidder may, or may not, be German publisher Norman Rentrop, the chairman of the £57m Verlag fur die Deutsche Wirtschaft (Publishing House for the German Business World) who owns 14 % of German football club Borussia Dortmund.

Mr Rentrop can only hope the auction does not heat up in the final two days. If successful, he and four friends will take lunch with Mr Murdoch in New Corp’s private executive dining room in New York, while the Jerusalem College of Technology will be £14,410 richer.

Mr Murdoch has established links with the Israeli hi-tech industry. News Corp subsidiary NDS, which develops the firm’s satellite encryption software, has offices in the country.

The lunch is listed through eBayGiving Works, the charity listings that offer not-for-profit organistions a way of raising funds and awareness. Details of the auction can be found at eBay.com/rupertmurdoch

Britons Limber Up for the Main Event – the Long Lunch

December 31, 2010
By

Watching the Olympic Games can do a lot for a nation: instill a sense of pride and provide inspiration for the overweight to do some exercise. But for many employers the three-week long event can also mean a distracted workforce, decreased productivity and disgruntled managers as staff find ways to catch their favorite events.

And if Sydney made us late for work and Athens made us rush home early, Beijing 2008 which kicks off next Friday threatens to distract us during prime working hours, with many of the main events beginning around lunchtime.

With millions expected to keep updated through live internet streaming, blogs and mobile messaging, companies should expect a dip in productivity, according to economic think tank the Center for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).

“During any major sporting event people work less productively,” said Arek Ohanissian, economist at the CEBR. “Excessive absenteeism and a lack of engagement could be a problem, particularly as the Olympics will be going on during office hours.

“We estimate that the Olympics could cost Britain up to £600,000 in lost productivity.”

It’s not all bad news. The British propensity to celebrate sporting events with fatty food and vast quantities of lager may give the economy a helping hand. “People spend more during big sporting events – the World Cup added around £1bn to the economy,” said Ohanissian.

Technology experts predict that Beijing will have the most live coverage of any Olympic Games with more ways of keeping abreast of the greco-roman wrestling than ever before, but that may be a positive thing for employers, said Heather Hancock, managing partner for innovation and brand at Deloitte.

“We are going to see much more digital consumption of these Olympics, with people using PDAs and mobiles to get their Olympic updates,” she said. “The way we consume news has changed and what we are likely to see is employees getting a quick sporting fix in bite-sized chunks and then getting on with their work.”

Hancock says Deloitte is not expecting the timing of Olympic events to cause disruption. Like many companies, the organization is encouraging staff to get involved by asking employees on holiday at the Olympics to blog for the company’s intranet and following the progress of athletes sponsored by the company.

“We want people to connect with what is happening on the other side of the world. If we lose employees attention for the 10 seconds of the 100m, I don’t think we have to be too worried,” she said.

Still, companies need to have a clear policy when it comes to Olympic skiing, said Steve Williams, head of equality and diversity at Acas, the industrial disputes mediator. “Organizations need to be aware that this type of event generates a huge amount of interest and they need to be flexible but firm.

“There is no need to be a spoilsport, but staff may need to be reminded that they still have contractual requirements and if they are switching off, it may be their colleagues who have to shoulder the burden.”

Not everyone will be watching the Olympics, either at work or on the sofa. Beijing is perhaps the only games in recent history where not watching a masterful clean and jerk by a Greek weight lifter could be considered a political act. Hundreds of groups have sprung up on social networking site Facebook, urging people to switch off their televisions in protest of China’s human rights record with groups like Boycott the Beijing Olympics attracting more than 18,000 members.

But in many pockets of the country excitement about the forthcoming games is palpable. Not least in Liverpool’s Chinatown, where the community is planning a cocktail competition to mark the opening ceremony and sneaking televisions into kitchens throughout the city’s Chinese quarter, said community representative Alan Seatwo.

“The Chinese community is extremely excited about the Olympics. There has been a lot of bad press but this really is the first chance for our mother country to show the world what it can do.”

The Perfect Home-Cooked Spanish Lunch

Getting to know the neighbors is a vital part of settling in to a happy expat life in Spain. What if you want to play host to some friendly Spanish residents? They might not appreciate your British fare but they will be impressed if you rustle up something Spanish. It’s as easy as this…

First course is the summer favorite gazpacho, a delicious, bright red soup served cold. The perfect primer plato:

Gazpacho (serves 6)

1 large onion
1 green pepper
1 small cucumber
1 kilo ripe tomatoes
220ml olive oil
110ml apple cider vinegar
660ml water
salt

Cut the vegetables into pieces, load them into the blender with the liquid ingredients and whizz till smooth. Add salt then pop in the fridge to chill. Serve with fresh bread from the panaderia with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping. Delicious!

If you’re short of kitchen equipment, don’t trail round the shops. Shopping online is a must if you’re an expat. You can buy from your favorite UK names in the comfort of your own home. Delivery to Spain is quick and inexpensive.

On to your main course. This plato principal is another Spanish classic: tortilla de patata, hearty and very tasty. Add whatever you want – spinach, mushrooms, ham – and serve with fresh, green salad.

Tortilla de Patata (serves 4-6)

275g small potatoes
1 medium white onion
5 large eggs
salt and freshly milled black pepper
olive oil

Peel the potatoes and slice thinly. Dice the onions. Heat enough oil to cover
the potatoes in a frying pan. Make sure it’s non-stick or you’ll never get the tortilla out! Add the potatoes and cook on a low heat for a few minutes. Add the onions then flip the potatoes over so they cook evenly. Now crunch up the potatoes in the pan with a wooden spoon. When everything is soft and golden brown, drain off the oil and reserve. Beat the eggs in a large bowl and add a pinch of salt. Add the potatoes and onions and stir well. Heat some of the reserved oil in the pan and add the potato mix. Cook on a medium to high heat. When the tortilla is cooked on the bottom, flip it over and cook the other side. Clever cooks flip the tortilla like a pizza but, if it’s your first time, it’s safer to lift and turn with a fish slice!

Pudding is even easier. Choose fresh fruit and yogurt or pick up something sweet and delicious from your local pasteleria. To drink, a nice Rioja is perfect. Serve it the Spanish way with carbonated water. Salud!
