Strawberries should be considered very carefully by gout sufferers. The Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) stated that a diet of only strawberries had cured his gout. His linkage of vitamin C and gout gains extra weight from the fact that Linnaeus was a botanist. He probably knew a lot about strawberries. But do not follow a strawberries only diet. This is a crash diet which is not a good idea since crash diets can trigger gout, and may worsen it. With over 500,000 acres of land used for grape growing and wine production, as well as 22 distinct wine regions, Hungary is home to some excellent yet largely undiscovered wines—or as the Magyars call them: bor.

The country’s tradition of winemaking has spanned more than a thousand years. It even survived the Communists’ wreaking havoc on Hungary’s wine culture. Many wineries and vineyards were destroyed during Communism. “Fortunately, there remained a core [group of aficionados] in our society, for whom winemaking is a moral question — something that must be kept alive, — rather than merely a good business,” says Balint Losonci, Editor of Borbarat Magazin, a leading Hungarian wine publication. “And that is a precious heritage, one which must be revitalized.”

And an increasing number of wine producers and loyal consumers are attempting to do just that. “There has been growing emphasis on quality by many young consumers,” Losonci explains, “there are many newborn wine-clubs and wine routes.” And rightfully so: there are hundreds of private Magyar wineries and thousands of winemakers. Hungarian wines are comparable to other Eastern and Central European ones, and much of that resemblance is attributed to similarities in climate and wine preparation methods.

Take the acclaimed Tokay Aszu, for example, a sweet white table wine made in the wine district of Tokaj. Situated on the banks of Lake Balaton, this hillside region is Hungary’s greatest grape producer. The melodiously sweet wine is a favorite in Central Europe and is similar to some German rieslings. “It is concentrated, unique and has a fantastic sweetness-acidity balance that is unrivaled in the world,” says Losonci. According to fable, Franz Joseph gave bottle upon bottle of Aszu to Queen Victoria on her birthday. Even old Louis XIV termed Tokay “the wine of kings; the king of wines.”

The process of making Tokay Aszu is particular and tedious. After the must is perfected, small cloth containers are filled with the sweet pulp and juice of Aszu grapes and added to the wine. The value of Aszu is measured by the number of puttonys, or containers of pulp added—the more puttonys, the better the wine. Aszu is sold in two to six puttonys. The six puttonys, aptly named Tokay Essence, is rarely made and usually reserved for the winemaker’s best friends, celebrities, heads of state, and the like.

An excellent full-bodied red to try is Egri Bikavér, or Bull’s Blood of Eger. Legend says that Bikavér came in handy during the Turks’ occupation of Hungary. In 1552, the long-bearded Ali Pasha and over 100,000 of his soldiers attempted to take over the fortress of Eger. Bikavér-drinking Magyar soldiers – all 2,000 of them – triumphantly defended the fort. Much of their success is attributed to Bull’s Blood and its legendary powers to turn even the weakest of men into heroes. As such, this hearty wine is not for sissies, pansies or cowards. Turks may drink it in moderation.

For something different, try the semi-light Badacsonyi Szürke Barát, or Grey Friar of Badacsony, a delightful Pinot Gris. Or opt for Hajos-Bajai Kekfrankos Ausbruch, a ripe, fruity and rich red.

With great taste and ample variety, it’s a wonder Hungarian wines are not more popular around the world. The problem is in marketing and production, says Losonci. “Every wine region [that is] successful has to make its reference wine.” The focus has shifted from mass wine production to uniqueness and quality, resulting in increased interest from foreign investors. New products are being tested and developed, their quality at par with other Western wines. Once those new bottles are marketed, Magyar wines will popularize.

“Until then, [the focus is] on wine tourism, as there are some wonderful sights and places in our country with added wine-culture,” Losonci explains. Lake Balaton is a prime example: a place frequented by foreign visitors for its beautiful scenery and soothing waters, the mountainous terrain surrounding the Lake is also home to some of the country’s best vineyards and winemakers. Tourism will not only bring potential consumers, but also introduce Hungarian wines to potential investors, many of whom are finally getting familiar with Magyar culture.

Quality Hungarian wines are a lesser-known option for wine aficionados who crave something different. With better marketing and newfound focus on quality, Magyar wines are sure to become more popular in the near future. Even a lot of fitness professionals still believe this concept, I used to be one of them, but the idea that a calorie is a calorie is simply untrue. Eating 200 calories of ice cream versus 200 calories of vegetables isn’t even close to the same when it comes to eating healthy.

First off, if you remember talking about the glycemic index, you remember that the speed of the breakdown of a carbohydrate effects how fast your blood sugar is raised and how much insulin is released. The faster the blood sugar spike, the faster the resulting blood sugar crash and feeling of hunger. The more often you feel hungry, the more likely you’ll consume excess calories. So from this aspect alone, a low-glycemic, carbohydrate calorie is a lot more beneficial for decreased weight gain compared to a high-glycemic, carbohydrate calorie.

Another reason all calories aren’t the same has to do with the amount of fiber in the food. A high-fiber calorie promotes a faster feeling of fullness compared to a calorie that has little fiber. This means that you’ll nave some help in controlling your appetite and fighting off those unhealthy cravings. Fiber also reduces the speed at which foods are broken down, so as a result, your blood sugar won’t rise as fast and the amount of insulin released at one time will be reduced. All of this is good for weight control, as well as preventing or controlling diabetes.

As if these reasons weren’t enough for getting fiber in your diet, fiber has also been shown to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease, and possibly reduce the risk of stroke, along with many other benefits. The recommendations for fiber are 25 grams per day per 2000-calorie diet,1 and although you can get fiber supplements, it’s always better to get your fiber in the natural form from plants because your body handles natural nutrients better than synthetic nutrients.

One final piece of information to consider when deciding which foods to eat is TEF or the thermic effect of food. The thermic effect of food is how many calories your body burns in order to digest the food you eat. The great news is, as you workout, the thermic effect of food goes up. Basically, as your metabolism goes up, so does the TEF; your body burns off more calories digesting food when you maintain a lifestyle of working out.2

Another influencer of how high the thermic effect of food is is whether or not you’re eating regular meals. It has been shown that those who don’t eat every 2 to 3 hours have a decreased TEF.3,4 Just another reason why only eating 2 to 3 times per day isn’t going to cut it; 5 meals/snacks a day is essential if you want to have the greatest potential for fat loss.

Back when I was an athlete in college, the rumor going around the cafeteria was that you actually spend more calories digesting celery than you get from eating it. Unfortunately, there’s nothing out there that really proves this about celery, but hopefully this theory helps explain the concept of the thermic effect of food.

The reason the TEF is so important is because fats, carbohydrates, and protein all have different TEFs! The body only burns off a few calories when it is digesting fat; in fact, the TEF of fat is only about 3%.5 This means that for every 100 calories of fat that you consume, 3 calories are used by your body to digest the fat to either store it as body fat, use it as energy for something else, use it for padding in the joints, etc.

When digesting carbohydrates, the TEF is 7%,5 so for every 100 calories of carbohydrates digested, 7 calories are burned off digesting it. Keep in mind, these numbers may be lower for someone who doesn’t exercise, and while it may not be too much of a difference, it’s still a difference.

Now here’s the kicker when it comes to concluding that a calorie isn’t just a calorie. The TEF of protein is a whopping 25-30%!5 This means that for every 100 calories of protein you consume, your body burns off approximately 25-30 calories just to digest the protein! So when you’re talking about fat loss, you have to make sure that you’re getting your protein because as you can see, all calories are not the same.

A 300-calorie hotdog, with ketchup, has a ratio of about 50% fat, 40% carbs, and 10% protein. This means that you would burn off about 22 calories digesting the hotdog, but take something like a 300-calorie piece of chicken where the ratios are closer to 20% fat, 0% carbs, and 80% protein. Now you’re burning off about 74 calories in order to digest the chicken! That’s a difference of 52 more calories burned off by choosing a piece of roasted chicken over a hotdog. Imagine burning off 52 more calories each day just by making better food choices. That’s 364 more calories burned off in a week and 18,928 more calories burned off in a year! That means by choosing to make healthy choices with eating, not by choosing NOT to eat, you could burn off that many more calories in a year and have the potential to lose a little over 5 more pounds of fat per year just by choosing to eat healthier foods! You’re not even changing the amount of calories you eat, and because the TEF is higher with increased meal frequency, you’re eating every 2 to 3 hours and still burning off more fat! How cool is that?!

If you’ve made a commitment to yourself that you want to lose some excess body fat, it only makes sense that you make conscious choices with the foods you eat because as you now know, all calories are not the same. I’m sure you’ve noticed that when talking about calorie burn, on top of the benefits you get from exercising, you get more “bang for your buck” when eating protein. Besides having the highest thermic effect, protein also has many other benefits that will make your weight loss efforts even more productive. That brings us to the topic for next week, the importance of protein for fat/weight loss.

Drop 35 Pounds A Year Just By Changing The Way You Snack

Just because you are watching your weight doesn’t mean that you’re going to be eating a snack here and there and, in fact, eating smaller meals or healthy snacks In between meals can actually help boost your metabolism.

Even if you’re not on any type of diet plan but still want to drop a few pounds you can do this easily by changing the types of snacks that you eat. Let’s say you have a snack in between breakfast and lunch, another one in between lunch and dinner and another one later night – that’s three snacks today. Now let’s say that you choose for the snacks a bag of chips, a candy bar or cookies. Each one of these snacks is probably 250 to 350 calories. Now, if you replace the snacks with healthier snacks of around 100 calories you’ll be able to lose weight even if you don’t not change any of the other things that you eat!

Switching to healthier snacks is not only better for your waistline it’s better for your overall health to. Now instead of eating 800 or 900 calories worth of snacks today you’re only eating 300 or 400 calories worth which is a savings of around 500 calories a day which can really add up. Given that there’s about 3500 calories In a pound if you really did shave off 500 calories a day you could be losing a pound a week!

So the next time you reach for snack, think about being good to your hips and your health by choosing one of the healthy, low calorie snacks:

Apple slices with peanut butter are a great healthy snack as long as you choose all natural peanut butter that doesn’t have additives and especially sugar added. Go easy on the peanut butter, though as it is fatty ( healthy fat, but using too much can really pack on the calories). I like to cut the Apple open to slices and spread a thin layer of peanut butter in between two slices like a sandwich.

Fresh fruit is a great healthy snack and can help curb those sugar cravings. Fruits to have sugar but the body can metabolize them easier than the processed sugar, high fructose corn syrup in other nasty elements in process snack foods. Some great healthy choices for fruits include blueberries, pomegranate seeds, strawberries and cantaloupe.

If you’re a chip lover then you might want to think about switching to soy chips which will help curb your cravings for crunchy foods and will also add some protein into your diet which can help you feel full longer.

Yogurt can be a great healthy snack if you choose the right kind, and in fact, recent studies show that eating low-fat dairy products can help you to lose even more weight. You need to choose yogurt that has no sugar added and not the kind that has the blobs of fruit that you stir up as this will be loaded with sugar. The best pick is organic yogurt that has live cultures which can give your digestive system some of that good bacteria that it needs to work properly.

Just because you are trying to lose weight doesn’t mean that you should avoid snacks altogether, in fact eating more smaller meals during the day will help you feel full longer and less deprived as well as keep your metabolism revved up for more weight loss. You just need to pick snacks that are low in calories and fat and healthy!
