Thirtysomething Professionals in London get to Build Genuine Inner Confidence

February 16, 2011
By

London, UK (PRWEB) June 21, 2006

A new workshop designed specifically to build confidence and self-esteem for thirtysomething professionals is being held in London this September. The unique two day workshop will offer professional thirtysomethings a coherent, practical and proven approach to building their self-esteem and inner confidence for the long term, providing a solution for the problem of low self-confidence that an increasing number of thirtysomethings are encountering.

Confidence and self-esteem impact every part of peoples’ lives, from careers to relationships to health to finances, and a 2005 survey found that people aged 28-42 rate themselves as just 62% confident on average, with the huge majority wanting to be in the 90%-100% confident bracket. Over three-quarters admitted to having low self-esteem and would love to build their confidence, and over four out of ten would love to change their career but don’t believe they can. Confidence coach Steve Errey says “Confidence is both the biggest problem area for people and the biggest area of opportunity, and there’s a concrete need out there for something that speaks directly to people in their 30’s and genuinely builds lasting inner confidence.”

Errey has seen his private clients gain in confidence and self-esteem, and has developed this new workshop to tackle the problem head-on. “I know from my own background how debilitating and limiting a lack of confidence can be, and not only is this workshop based on what I’ve seen work in the real world with real people, but two full days allows people to go into enough depth to make a lasting difference rather than simply riding the feel-good wave for a few days after the workshop.” Feedback from his clients who’ve experienced Errey’s approach suggest that their confidence has been increased greatly and that they’re able to maintain these levels rather than see them drop back down to old levels.

“I am definitely more confident now than when I started,” says Agnes Costa-Correa, a broadcasting professional in London and one of Errey’s clients. “I don’t let things worry, bother and affect me as much as I did, and I’m seeing all kinds of opportunities in my career and other areas of my life where I previously would not have.” The workshop is the first of its kind in the UK and offers people a safe environment to learn about their confidence – what it is, how it works, what stops it and how to keep it high.

“Countless studies have shown that when people feel confident they are more likely to be creative, innovative and enterprising,” says confidence expert Carol Craig from the Centre of Confidence and Well-Being in Scotland. “They have better personal relationships, are open to new learning and have good physical and mental health. In the future, the confidence of a people may become as much a determinant of economic success as natural resources, like oil, have been in the past.“

September’s workshop is a down to earth and practical response to the specific causes of the problem and takes place over two consecutive Saturdays (23rd and 30th). Steve’s top three tips for building inner confidence are:

1. Give Your Confidence a Workout. You confidence works just like a muscle, but the problem is that unlike your biceps or glutes (which tend to stay in the same place) your confidence muscle can be harder to find. The more you use it the bigger it gets, the less you use it the smaller it gets. To work your confidence muscle you need to be willing to stretch yourself in an unfamiliar direction, to try something new or try something in a different way. The more open you are to risk, opportunity and possibility the more confident you need to be, and so the more confidence you’ll develop.

2. Get to Know the Real You. Ten thousand feet down inside you, right at your very core are the building blocks, the foundations and cornerstones for you. Your values, strengths and talents are all yours, and no matter what happens nobody can ever take them away. Get to know them and have absolute confidence in them, because you can always use them to get great results.

3. Trust Number One. People spend too much time looking for external signs that they’re doing the right thing or on the right path. Instead of looking on the outside for those signs how about being able to trust yourself to get through anything and to continue making choices that serve you well – even if sometimes you screw up? Trust yourself to make decisions, trust yourself to adapt and trust that you’re good enough to have, do or be whatever you want. Now that’s true confidence.

Your Body’s Inner Intelligence: Chiropractic Healing

May 24, 2010

Chiropractic healing is a kind of healing that taps the body’s ‘inner intelligence’ – that innate sense of balance the body has when a person is physically, emotionally and mentally healthy. A healing art that was developed in the United States , chiropractic healing operates on the belief that the body can heal itself if there is an uninterrupted flow of energy or nerve impulses from the brain to the rest of the body.

It’s interesting to note that chiropractic healing came to the fore when David Palmer was able to cure deafness by manipulating a misaligned vertebra. This miraculous healing led more and more researches into the field of chiropractic healing. Modern chiropractors trace the beginnings of this art of healing to Hippocrates, who said, “Get knowledge of the spine, this is the requisite for many diseases”.

Chiropractors work primarily with the joints that lie along the spinal column. They believe that when the vertebrae and adjoining bones are misaligned in relation to the joints, the flow of impulses from the nerve is impeded or blocked. This in turn drains the body of its ability to stay healthy. What chiropractic healing does is quite evident from the name itself; ‘cheir’ means “hand” and ‘practikos’ means “done by” – healing manipulations that seek to correctly align the bones of the vertebra to restore total health. Chiropractic philosophy grew out of a ‘wholism’ which considers the body to be a single unified organ.

During therapy, a patient may hear his joints crack however the sessions are pain-free and quite refreshing too. This ‘crack’ is actually a vacuum-created nitrogen bubble that is bursting within the joint. The actual manipulations are often very gentle, and make use of a technique called ‘non-force’. Depending upon the nature of the problem and its longevity, multiple sessions may be needed. These techniques have been found to be very effective not only in restoring strength to the spine and vertebra, but also in restoring good health so that there is vigorous flow of energy throughout the body.

Chiropractic healing is an effective treatment for muscle, joint and bone problems. It is very effective when used to treat conditions such as headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome. It is the single most effective treatment for lower back pain. In fact, it has been so effective that it is the third largest health care profession after medicine and dentistry. Of the 36+ million Americans visiting chiropractors every year, 70% are treated for back pain, 20% for head and neck disorders and the rest are treated for other disorders. Chiropractic healing even soothes colicky babies, thereby giving harassed mothers a well-deserved break.

Chiropractic healing may also help people who are partially paralyzed. Therapy is not contained to the paralyzed parts of the body. Many confined individuals suffer from excessive shoulder and arm related injuries that come from the stress of using a wheelchair. Strengthening exercises help to prevent future injuries and harden the areas that are prone to over-use.

While one branch of Chiropractic healing keeps itself strictly within the parameters of hand-manipulation, another branch called Osteopathy actively uses heat, massage, nutrition and other therapies to achieve the same results. Chiropractic healing coaxes the body to heal itself, thus it is a great adjunct to traditional medicine.

The Art of Noshi-Do, Lesson Three (b): The Eight-Fold Path to Inner Peace

May 11, 2010
By

EXERCISE
Study after study has clearly shown that exercise promotes mental health and reduces symptoms of depression. It is probably the best immediate handling you can undertake.

Depending on your age, circumstances and fitness levels this can be as simple a taking a walk or gentle jog every day. Get yourself some space and some fresh air in your lungs. Notice the scenery.

Physical activity and exercise are powerful anti-depressants and numerous studies have shown that aerobic exercise, for instance, can improve your mood and is an antidote for mild depression and anxiety.

Physical exercise changes the level of serotonin in your brain and increases your levels of endorphins – the “feel good” hormones. Evidently you can actually change your brain for the better with exercise. That beats wrecking it with drugs.

A word of warning though: exercised can be addictive (so I am told).

MEDICAL
Get yourself a check-up and make sure all your bits are working. Handle anything that isn’t – preferably with diet and nutrition and NO drugs if this is feasible. Many physical illnesses (Lyme disease for example) have depression among their symptoms.

NUTRITION
Go see a nutritionist and get your whole diet checked out, locate any food allergies. You’ll be surprised how many cases of the screaming abdabs actually trace back to the fact that the person is ingesting poisons or has a serious dietary deficiency (or more than one). For example. B vitamins play a role in the production of certain neurotransmitters that are important in regulating mood and other brain functions and Folic acid deficiency has been noted among people with depression. Vitamin B6, deficiency can result in depression and people with depression can respond better to treatment if they have higher levels of vitamin B12.

The aforementioned poisons include but are not limited to: refined sugar, fructose, refined flour, processed foods, coffee, alcohol, street drugs, legal drugs, food preservatives, pesticides and other toxins.

It is becoming increasingly evident that omega-3 fats are a VERY important nutrient indeed for handling depression. I strongly recommend high-quality omega-3 supplements such as fish oil.

LIGHT THERAPY
I have not tried this but I hear very good things about it and its logic makes sense – although living in Dear Old Blighty (England) and looking out of my study window at a grey and dismal November afternoon, I am tempted to have a crack at it.

A lack of sunlight is responsible for the secretion of the hormone melatonin, which can trigger a dispirited mood and a lethargic condition. Light therapy apparently helps to regulate the body’s internal clock in the same way that sunlight does. Anyone living in a climate with bleak winters will be aware of how much the advent of spring and increased sunlight elevate mood.

Exposure to sunlight stimulates the production of Vitamin D and having healthy vitamin D levels is also a powerful tool with which to obviate depression. One study found that people with low levels of vitamin D were 11 times more prone to depression than those who had normal levels.

CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT
Sometimes your environment, loaded with subtle re-stimulators of buried memories and unwanted associations, can get you down. Changing it can mean taking a holiday, changing your job, moving to another town or emigrating to Australia and starting a new life.

STOP READING THE NEWSPAPERS
I kid you not. You’ll be surprised how much better you will feel after not reading the newspapers or watching the news for a while (or surfing the internet). The media bombard us morning, noon and night with bad news upon bad news, problem upon problem, usually dressed up to be as gruesome as possible. It’s hardly surprising then that people can get depressed.

The media might be doing its bit to bolster pharmaceutical sales but we CAN just skip it.

EDUCATION
Learn a new skill or subject. Become more proficient in or knowledgeable about something. Most people can think of at least one subject they always meant to take up but never did.

A practical skill involving physical doing is probably best but anything that boosts your competence and self esteem will do the trick. But if you are studying something, here is a priceless tip that all by itself turned my life around when it was given to me and now I am passing it on to you:

Never go past a word you do not fully understand. Thoroughly clear it up in a good dictionary until you really get it. You can actually raise your own IQ by doing so.

DIANETICS (Highly Recommended)
I will have a lot to tell you about the science of Dianetics in the near future. If you want to understand your own mind and what makes you and other people tick, if you want to know the source of the neuroses, fears and compulsions that beset us, the get a book on Dianetics and read it.

Just reading up on it and finally understanding the workings of my own mind (and the other guy’s) is the best remedy for depression I personally ever came across but Dianetics goes much further than that. It gives the average person like you and me the TOOLS with which to help ourselves and one another.

Dianetics is currently taking the world by storm, with Dianetics groups springing up all over the place. There is a very good reason for that.

Get a Dianetics book. Read it. Find out for yourself.

Fitness – Your Inner Song

May 10, 2010
By

Fitness is a great communicator, a charismatic force that puts you in touch with your inner self. It builds bridges within you that heal and seal the yawning emptiness mentioned earlier in this chapter. And it follows that when you feel great about yourself, complete in yourself, can you relate better to other people that you are in touch with.

Fitness is a three-way process. Firstly, it sparks off a communicative current within you. In turn, you – in an entirely natural manner – transfer this spark to the people you deal with. And here comes the interesting part. So irresistible is this special spark that the people you deal with respond in kind. There is an explanation for this phenomenon.

By being fit you are in your natural element. Which means you have awakened the inner you a special entity. When you feel that specialness, you communicate it unconsciously to the next person. And equally unconsciously, the next person responds to your specialness.

Look at the other side of the coin. If you are not fit, you are not confident, you slouch a little, perhaps you mumble. Unconsciously, you are beaming out a negative message to the other person. A message that murmurs timidly, “I am not confident, I am not special” And, likewise, the other person responds – turning your opinion about yourself back on you.

But fitness makes you stand upright with your spine straight and firm. Your eyes are clear, there is a glow about you. You may not say much, but your bearing, the way you hold yourself says, “I am special” And the other person absorbs this and gives a mental appreciative nod.

In short, fitness restructures the grammar of your body language. It infuses it with positive adjectives and beams them out to everybody. Fitness enhances your solo performance on the stage of life.

If you have watched – even as you have listened to – a solo performance of an artiste singing, you may have observed a few things. At first, the singer may look as ordinary as the boy or girl next door. But as the notes spiral upwards and the night deepens, there’s a flush on his face. The features seem transformed by an inner emotion giving him a strange glow, an extraordinary beauty. The audience feels not only the magic of the music but also vibrates to the personality of the performer.

Why is it that we come away from a musical performance feeling uplifted? The genius of the singer is undisputed. But has it ever struck you that there is also something special inside you that responds so wholeheartedly to the magic?

If you examine yourself in this new light, you will get a fresh perspective on yourself. That you, too, are no run-of-the-mill individual, but a tremendous entity in yourself. For some reason our culture does not teach us anything positive about our individual selves. It’s sad because we lose so much by going through life feeling inferior. Yet, if every one of us were to be analysed objectively, we’d find greatness residing in every single being.

You may feel that those who’ve reached the top of the corporate ladder, for example, must be feeling they’re the greatest – the achievers. Surprisingly, it is not sp. We’ve met a few who don’t. They still feel they lack something. Which is why they set out to impress you by dropping names, informing you directly or indirectly about their assets. They even go to extreme lengths to prove they are creative, broad-minded, have a vision.

In all probability, if you too are tuned only to your negative self, you come away feeling patronized, abused, put down. This is where we mourn the loss of communication. Two warm, lovely people can vibe poorly due to a total lack of communication within themselves.

But suppose you are positive about yourself, know deep within you that your existence in this world is as justified as the next person’s, that though you are only a small part of the dynamic human race there is nobody like you, that you may not be a top dog in a corporation but are an extremely important member of the world, you would react differently. You would recognise the fact that the other guy is only trying to impress you by trotting out his acquaintances and assets. That he wants you to feel he is as intelligent as you, as creative as you. In other words, he feels he is only , as important as the people he knows, the things he possesses.

The problem with the person you’ve met is that he is not in harmony with himself. But you needn’t feel pulled down to his level if you believe and know that you are a physical phenomenon created by Nature with a mind, a spirit, suffused by something special- the inner song.

It is the inner song – that great harmonious element within you – that has responded to the almost divine spell cast by the singer’. You feel uplifted because during those precious hours all the components inside you were in harmony, a state of equilibrium -like a perfectly composed song.

In this condition, you can be quietly content or joyously vibrant. And for days afterwards, the memory of that wonderful experience tingles within you. This is so because of a simple law of nature. The singer has communicated through his art and you have absorbed it and responded to it. And you have been able to react so ‘positively because it has touched the positive self inside you. It means you have the ability to be positive. Just like say, a piano when played gives off music. When the keys inside you were ‘pressed’ by the singer’s melody, you too vibrated and ‘gave off music.’

But, you may ask, how do I keep those keys pressed constantly, how do I hold on to that special tingle? The answer is simple. Keep fit. Fitness opens the doors to self-belief. It keeps you in a perpetual state of inner harmony. Wasn’t it William Shakespeare, that great literary king, who wrote, “To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.” To that, we’d add, “and no man can be false to you,” because with your inner confidence, with the inner song humming through you, you need never feel that somebody is putting you down or patronizing you – because you are an extraordinary creation of nature, a gift to humankind. In simple words: because you are you.
