Increasing Methadone-Related Deaths Alarming

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s Drug Abuse Warning Network reported that more than 10,000 people turned up in emergency rooms after having abused methadone in 2001, which is double the number from just two years earlier.

Reported deaths from methadone abuse are rising in North Carolina, Florida, West Virginia, Maryland, Montana and Nevada while it has become the deadliest drug in Oregon according to state medical examiners. Meanwhile, profits for the drug’s manufacturer and dispensers have increased dramatically as well.

Methadone was developed by German chemists as a painkiller during World War II and has been widely used as drug replacement therapy to get addicts off heroin and other opiates. There are currently more than 1,200 facilities that dispense methadone to addicts, totaling approximately 200,000 patients. While methadone may not produce the same high as heroin or Oxycontin, it is more physically addictive and more difficult to withdraw from.

The Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies (DATOS) issued a report on a multi-city study of status of patients before and after various types of treatment, including outpatient methadone treatment. A new documentary called “Methadonia” is to be aired on HBO that follows the lives of several methadone patients, including one who has been on the drug for 30 years.

According to J.J., a 30 year-old former heroin addict from Michigan, “I was on methadone for 5 years and it was much harder to get off than the heroin. You can’t skip a day going to the [methadone] clinic or you immediately get really sick. It’s a trap either way.”

Approximately 3 grams of mixed phosphate salts appears to be required for this effect.

Dieters, especially those who have been through the “diet wars” several times, should try improving thyroid functioning before opting for yet more stimulants. Example of Increasing Satiety Via Neurotransmitters

Let’s take one example to show what is involved in increasing satiety by influencing brain chemistry. We have met serotonin already. Serotonin, which is produced from the amino acid L-tryptophan, is the neurotransmitter most strongly linked to satiety regulation. The diet drugs fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine (now banned) specifically target serotonin release and reuptake. Several weight loss drugs do the same. Hence, a natural precursor to serotonin, such as Phenylethelamine HCL, would appear to have potential to aid in weight loss.

Does it work? Absolutely, although the amount of Phenylethelamine HCL necessary to influence weight loss via appetite suppression appears to be quite high. Several Italian clinical trials have shown that in dosages of 600-900 mg per day, Phenylethelamine HCL over periods of five to six weeks without dieting can lead to weight loss averaging 3.1 pounds to 3.7 pounds. On diets restricted to 1,200 calories per day, dieters lost between 6.8 and 7.3 pounds in these studies. The control group taking only placebo lost 1.1 pounds during the six-week trial. Weight loss of one-half pound per week without dieting is not a bad record. However, at the 900 mg per day dosage level, 70 percent of the Phenylethelamine HCL group re-ported nausea during the first six weeks of the trials. The nausea did not continue into the second six weeks. More recent trials with diabetic subjects also found benefit with 750 mg per day.

Approximately 3 grams of mixed phosphate salts appears to be required for this effect.

Dieters, especially those who have been through the “diet wars” several times, should try improving thyroid functioning before opting for yet more stimulants. In addition to items such as guggul, keep in mind that the thyroid requires building blocks for its hormones. Increasing the amount of protein in the diet helps, especially the complete protein found in whey. Similarly, over a period of several months, the essential fatty acids discussed in Chapter? may help.
