Simple Golf Swing Technique – Chip Like You Putt

When you are around the greens, try to chip like you putt. This simple golf swing technique can help you gain consistency and shave strokes off your game.

Many golfers who struggle with chip shots do so because they allow their wrists to break during the backswing. This leads to what is commonly referred to as “a classic chunk shot” or worse the dreaded skulling of the ball clear across the green. In either case, you are left with either another chip shot or a long putt.

Considering that 60 to 70 percent of shots taken on a golf course are inside of 100 yards, it is important to be able to adapt to different situations with ease. There are more shots lost around the putting surface than any other place on the course.

During a round of golf, most amateurs are faced with 6 to 8 shots from just off the green. The difference between par and bogey is often determined on how close you get the ball to the hole with these shots.
You have a much better chance of sinking a putt from 2, 3 or 4 feet than you do from 10, 12 or 15 feet.

If this is something that you contend with, then the simple golf swing technique I am about to share with you will make all the difference in the world.

Practice this simple golf swing technique and you are certain to shave 4 or 5 strokes off your score without making any other changes to your game.
Choke down on the club. I generally use a pitching wedge when chipping, but this does vary depending on how far I am from the hole.

Place the ball back in your stance just a bit behind center. My stance is narrower and the ball appears to be well back in my stance, but is really only about 2 inches or so off center.

Your hands should be forward of the ball. I find that because I am assuming more of a putting stance and posture, my hands will tend to be a few inches forward of center. This position will cause the clubface to close a bit and reduce the loft of the club.

Your eyes will be directly over the target line looking down on the ball.

Use your normal putting stroke taking the club straight back. Your stroke should go no further than the 7 o’clock position and following through to 5 o’clock. Don’t allow your wrists to break in either direction. The clubface should follow the target line from start to finish.

This stroke will cause the ball to pop into the air and land on the green with forward spin and should run out like a putt to the hole.

The only adjustment you may need to make would be which club you use. If you need to let the ball run a good way, then you may want to use a 7 or 8 iron.

It is no secret that most of the male and female tour players who want to play their best golf, do golf weight training exercises. But it’s not the kind of grueling, sweating stuff you’re thinking about.

There is a HUGE misconception of what and how this type of program should be done. It does not take going into a gym and lifting heavy weights; nor does it take a 2-3 hour daily commitment.

I have seen many “so-called” golf weight training programs, books, and videos etc that do in fact show the golfer in the gym and on machines. Sitting on a machine, isolating one muscle group is not golf-specific or sport-specific for that matter.

Golf is a dynamic movement done on your feet. Sitting in a machine in a “controlled” environment will not improve your swing.

The golf swing incorporates most of the muscles of the body in a sequential motion. I hope you can now see sitting in a machine won’t improve that.

So what truly is a ‘golf-specific’ program?

For starters, doing a lot of exercise ‘on your feet’ and in your golf posture will help. The more you can get in your posture and strength train, the quicker the benefit to your game.

Golf also involves balance and stabilization. To improve this takes a concentrated effort on core work and exercises involving balance (such as one-legged exercises).

The more popular golf-exercises are done on a stability ball; using exercise tubing; handweights; and even weighted medicine balls.

4. Exercise your abs

Your mid-section supports your back and provides stability for a strong swing. With barbells in hand, stand straight and lift overhead. Direct your mid-section muscles up towards the spine. Take deep breaths to pull your tummy in, hold longer. Doing this 15 to 20 times strengthens your abs.

5. Exercise your wrist

A strong wrist leashes out the power generated by your body for a powerful golf swing. Rotate the hip and the upper torso for a forward swing. Hold the club without wobbling. Mimic your swing to hit a ball. Do weight lifting to exercise your wrist.

6. Exercise your brain for mental fitness

Regular physical exercises provide greater blood flow to the brain and thereby increase your memory.

*The kind your best friend, who happens to be a great putter… unless of course you have had a chance to actually putt with it and you truly do like it.

This is one of the most important considerations when choosing a putter; avoid all three of the above methods of choosing!

Putters have specifications and characteristics that can effect your putting in good or bad ways. Here are the qualities you need to look for:

*Shaft length and lie angel (the angle the shaft comes out of the head of the club) must fit you in three ways

*It must allow you to address the ball with your eyes directly over the target line while your hands are under your shoulders.

*If must be long enough so you are completely comfortable in your shoulders, legs or back when practicing for long periods of time and don’t experience unusual fatigue.

*You should choose a design that will help eliminate your most common mistakes.

To find out what these are put a piece of impact tape on the putter you now use and stroke 30 putts, if your marks are mostly near the heel you want a heel-shaft putter (the shaft enters the heel of the putter).

If you tend to strike towards the head, you want a center shafted putter.

*If you want alignment aids on your clubs, get them, they are legal and anything that helps your stroke is encouraged.

*Find a putter with a light club head, try a few strokes with it, then tape a couple of dimes to the back of the head, does it feel better or worse to put with the added weight.

*Grip size and shape are important factors; the grip needs to be small enough for you to be able to control easily, but big enough so your fingers don’t overlap uncomfortably.

In fact, the putter is the only club allowed to have a flat top on the grip. This allows for more consistent grip each time you use it.

Putting is such a ‘feel’ part of the game, so the putter you eventually choose will be the putter that best fits your eye and works best for you. So, take your time and try out several makes and models before you make your final decision.
