Obesity, or being fat, is often attributed to generic factors. My parents were fat and so I am destined to be fat as well. I can not help what I look like because it is in my genes.

While generics may play a part in the weight determination of a person, it is far more likely that the extra pounds of fat are not as much a generic problem, but more likely a bad eating plan that is passed on from parents to children.

Being an avid people watcher and also being in the fortunate position where my office is located in a local shopping centre, I am able to study a lot of families from a distance. There are thin families, normal families and many fat families that frequent the shopping centre.

One of the first things that I have noticed about these families is that in general husband, wife and children are mostly built the same. If the husband and wife are both thin, mostly the children are thin as well, but where the husband and wife are fat, the children are fat as well.

Now does that not prove that fat is in the genes as the children of fat people end up fat!

No, not at all. The father and mother of the child, have different genes. Being in a smaller town for many years, I have known many of these families for years and I know the grand parents as well. A thinner man bred from thinner parents, goes on to meet and marry a small girl, also from thinner parents, but as the years go by, they get fatter.

Along come the children, and suddenly the children join the parents in getting fatter and the whole family becomes fairly obese, despite the fact that the grandparents are slim. That is not generic but rather bad habits that have crept in and caused obesity to come upon a family.

Studying some of these obese families and obese children, one thing that I have found in common is that mostly they come out of the local supermarket with lots of junk food in their shopping baskets and gorging themselves on sweets, chips and cakes etc.

One particular obese little girl of about five years of age, manages to finish at least one to two bread rolls, a packet of chips and a can of cool drink in the trip back to their car in the parking area. The trip is less than 50 yards!

While generic factors may control weight to a degree, the real factor behind obesity is lack of control of eating and poor eating habits. By simply following a good healthy eating plan and reducing the intake of junk foods, obesity can be reduced and health increased.
