Obama Gets Campaign Back on Track With Wyoming Win

Barack Obama got his campaign back to winning ways on Saturday by notching up a triumph in the Wyoming caucuses and ending a run of dramatic victories by rival Hillary Clinton.

With almost all the votes counted Obama easily beat Clinton by 58% to 41%. His win appeared to be propelled by the heavy turnout of voters, especially among college students in the state’s universities.

The caucuses, like previous contests in this compelling Democratic race, saw huge crowds of people packed into venues across the state. Some places had to conduct the caucuses in staggered stages to cope with the crowds. In 2004 only 675 people attended the Democrat caucuses, but on Saturday that total was easily smashed as more than 7,000 voters turned out.

Though Wyoming’s caucuses are worth just 12 of the vital convention delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination, the win is a much needed boost to the Obama campaign. Clinton’s victories in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island last week have revitalized her bid to be America’s first woman commander-in-chief.

They allowed her to paint herself as a comeback candidate who was able to win key big states, like Ohio, which are likely to be the vital battleground with Republican nominee John McCain in the November presidential election. They have also given her once almost dead campaign a vital surge in support. A new poll in Newsweek magazine now shows Clinton virtually tied with Obama in national polls with 44% to his 45%.

Obama’s victory in Wyoming is likely to help settle nerves in his campaign. The huge rural Western state might seem an unlikely place for Obama – who is seeking to become America’s first black president – to perform strongly. But Obama was actually widely expected to win in a state that is more famous for its cowboys and rodeos than its role in national politics.

Obama has consistently performed well in the smaller states which hold caucuses, rather than primaries, and which reward voter enthusiasm and good organization. He has also generally beat Clinton in contests in ‘red states’ like Wyoming rather than states which usually vote Democratic in presidential elections.

The win also comes after a series of bad news events hit the Obama campaign that has rocked its recent image of inevitability and cool professionalism. First, details leaked of a discussion between an Obama aide and Canadian officials over free trade. The talks appeared to contradict Obama’s public comments over the NAFTA trade agreement which is unpopular in Ohio.

Then another senior Obama advisor, Samantha Power, left the campaign after she told a Scottish newspaper that Clinton was a ‘monster’. That remark sparked a firestorm of protest and Obama condemned the comment. Power later apologised to Clinton.

At the same time Obama’s campaign has had to deal with a stridently more negative strategy from the Clinton camp as both campaigns realize that the race is likely to continue to the end of the process in June with neither side conceding. Due to the closeness of the race and because the Democrats assign delegates in a proportional fashion neither side can win the key number of 2,025 ‘pledged delegates’ need to win in the electoral contest.

Instead now both candidates need so-called ‘super delegates’ to get over the finishing lines. Super delegates are a mix of party officials and elected politicians and each campaign is making intense bids for their support.Before Clinton’s recent wins, many super delegates appeared set to get behind Obama’s campaign, but her comeback put those efforts on hold. Now that Obama has won in Wyoming, and is favorite to win in Tuesday’s primary in Mississippi, that pressure is likely to be applied again. At the moment Obama holds a delegate lead of about 100 over Clinton.

However, neither Wyoming nor Mississippi are seen as anywhere nearly as important as Pennsylvania, which goes to the polls in April. That race, which could favor Clinton, is seen as the most important battleground left in the contest. Pennsylvania has 158 delegates and is predicted to be Clinton’s best chance to narrow the delegate gap sufficiently so that her campaign can claim that Obama’s lead is narrow enough to be discounted as any form of decisive victory.

Obama Launches Campaign Urging Congress to Pass Healthcare Reform

President Barack Obama has launched a vigorous campaign to force an overhaul of healthcare through Congress within weeks, and extend affordable medical insurance to all Americans, as the centerpiece of his domestic agenda is threatened by Republicans exploiting divisions in the president’s party and rising public anxiety over the cost of reform.

Obama has accused his opponents of playing the politics of “delay and defeat” as he urges Congress to pass legislation before it goes into recess next month out of concern that if the process drags on late into the year public and congressional support will further erode. The Republicans are now openly attempting to stall the reforms and have said that they see an opportunity to deliver Obama a damaging political defeat.

The president has gone on the offensive by lobbying members of Congress and by appealing directly to the voters in warning that the existing system “works for the insurance and drug companies” while ordinary people face escalating insurance premiums.

“The need for reform is urgent and it is indisputable,” Obama said. “We’ve talked this problem to death, year after year.”

Several bills working their way through Congress would expand health insurance through a new government scheme that would ensure 97% of the population is covered. An estimated 47 million Americans, one in six of the population, is without health coverage. The legislation would subsidize premiums for those on low incomes.

Under a bill before the House of Representatives, the new scheme would in part be paid for with a tax surcharge of between 1% and 5% on high earners. Employers will also be required to provide health benefits to workers or pay the government to do so.

But the process is running in to problems. Six senators, three of them Democrats, have written to Obama urging him to slow passage of the legislation and win the agreement of both parties. One of the senators, Joe Lieberman, described the reforms as “enormous and complicated” and said they shouldn’t be rushed.

Even in the House of Representatives there are signs that doubts are beginning to set in over warnings about cost.

Obama has said he will not sign any healthcare bill that raises the deficit and has argued that reform can be paid for in part by reducing the escalating cost of treatment through the power of the government to negotiate preferential prices with drug companies.

But the president was delivered a significant blow last week when the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) director, Doug Elmendorf, warned that far from saving money, the proposed reforms would add $239bn to the national debt over ten years.

That has proven to be particularly sensitive in the present economic climate with opinion polls showing that public support for Obama on healthcare reform has slumped to less than 50% in part over concerns at the cost.

The president’s position was not helped when a meeting of governors also raised concerns about being landed with the cost of underwriting insurance for the poor.

Then yesterday a hospital Obama has praised as an example of affordable quality healthcare, the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, came out against his plan.

“The proposed legislation misses the opportunity to help create higher-quality, more affordable healthcare for patients. In fact, it will do the opposite,” the hospital said.

The Republicans have pounced on the concerns. The Huffington Post published what it said is a private Republican party memo outlining strategies to defeat Obama’s proposals through delay. These include a publicity campaign that claims the reforms will deepen the national debt, that the president is endangering healthcare and the economy by experimenting with change, and that the government will take over control of patient care and medicines.

Some Republicans sense Obama is on the back foot. Senator Jim DeMint was recorded in a conference call discussion saying that Republicans should block healthcare reform to undermine the president.

“If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him,” he said.

The president responded directly to DeMint by accusing some Republicans of playing with an issue as important as healthcare in order to try and regain control of Congress at the next election.

“Think about that. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics. This is about a healthcare system that is breaking America’s families, breaking America’s businesses and breaking America’s economy. And we can’t afford the politics of delay and defeat when it comes to healthcare, not this time, not now,” he said.

Obama has also come under criticism for not going to Congress with a detailed plan and instead relying on members to shape the legislation, apparently out of a wish to avoid President Bill Clinton’s mistake in trying to impose healthcare reform and watching it fail.

Obama warned that his opponents are attempting to repeat the strategy.

“They explicitly went after the Clintons, said we’re not going to get this done. So it was a pure political play, a show of strength by the Republicans that helped them regain the House. I think there are folks who think that we should try to dust off that old playbook,” he said.

Quantity vs. Quality

There are plastic signs, and then there are paper signs, and plastic coated paper signs. Paper signs are cheaper and yet they are also easily ruined by rain or bad weather, so are they worth the funds you spend on them? Plan with your weather conditions in mind; you can use plastic coated paper signs, those are easily readable and stand the test of weather better, but then again, plastic signs can work for you too. They are relatively expensive and they can get hard to read after being exposed to bad weather but if you are ordering in a large quantity, plastic campaign signs can do the job. For once, quantity wins over quality; give yourself as much exposure as you can manage.

What makes the Cut?

A lot can be said on a campaign sign, and why not is what most people ask; there is space on it! Before you decide what you want on the sign, work out the basics of visual effect and retention of the message.

Colors Matter

Decide the colors of your political campaign sign with care. You may love white but will it work? Consider it a bad option in winter; would it stand out against the natural background with snow around? Surely not. It is also important to know when not to mention political affiliations though. That would be when you know your party is not popular in an area, when it can work against you, yes, overlooking to mention the simple things can help.

Slogans

Have you tried reading roadside signs while driving by? It is hazardous to try and it is probably a useless exercise you should not indulge in. The shorter you keep your campaign sign the better it would be. Make sure to get your identity across, political slogans and such can be restricted to places where you know people will stop and have time to read more. Strategic locations such as around schools where parents come to pick up children etc. work well.

Your Constituency

People can get to know you through your name and that you are running in the elections, but make sure to tell them what you are running for. Mention if you are running for the local town council or the mayor’s position or even congress but be brief, people do not want to know if it is the 20th council or the 205th, just guide the vote in.

Use Icons

It is the information age after all, use icons instead of slogans, and why not? People do recognize the major political parties with their icons, and they are those who have spent millions on campaigning so they use the most effective and time tested methods, watch and learn!

Your political campaign signs are a way of presenting your candidature to the voters, you can present it within the laws or you can push them too, but remember that a politician who does not show respect for the law can easily lose respect of the voter too. Google does not like people that put affiliate links on their adds. So, you probably asking yourself “Why should i care?”. The answer is simple, affiliate links on adds will reduce your quality score. With less quality score you will pay more per click than you should. You don´t want that.

But, What Is a DoorWay Page?

For this example, if you were promoting a weigh loss product, a good doorway page would be to create a simple page on the internet with a review about the product. At that page you put something like this “Click Here To Visit (Your Product Name)”. That link will be you affiliate link. So they click there and if they buy, you get the commission.

Organize Keywords

If you are new to this, then you will do like i did when i started. Going back again to our examples: fitness and weight loss products. What you will probably do, is get keywords for those 2 products ( Google Keyword Tool can help you with that ) and mix them in one campaign. Don´t make the same mistake i did. Again, your quality score will decrease and you will pay more per click than you should. Google like targeted campaigns. So what you have to do, is create 2 campaigns. One for the weight loss product and the other for the fitness product.
