In the year 1983, he with John Baudhuin opened the world’s first spinning class in California, and later on developed an exercise program which certified other spinning instructors. So, what is so great about spinning class? Calories burned in spinning class are very high, apart from the fact that these classes also help you to train for races. Let us look a what is a spin class, the amount of spinning class calories burned and the pros and cons of these aerobic exercises.

What is a Spin Class?
For spinning, specially designed stationary exercise bikes are used, which are also called as spinning bikes. In a spin class, high beat music keeps playing, and there is an instructor who will keep talking to you through visualizations of an outdoor cycling workout. The cycling pace will keep changing in the spin class, sometimes it will be very fast and sometimes it will be pedaling slowly in a standing position. This helps to train the body and mind together for the circumstances that occur during races.

How many Calories Burned by Spinning?
If you are looking for solutions of burning calories fast, then join spinning class. Calories burned in an average 30 minute spinning class session are around 500! Yes, these high intensity cardiovascular exercises allows you to burn a huge amount of calories fast. This all, done with a group, is more fun and easier to achieve.

Pros & Cons of a Spin Class
There are certain pros and cons of spinning workouts. A spin class will allow you to train for a race during an off season. It is a good training session which allows you to increase your endurance. There are various routines designed in a spin class, which makes the class interesting. You can train for the race or workout to burn calories, in a more controlled environment and hence possibility of an injury is reduced. Some of the cons of spinning classes is that they are not actually outdoors on a moving bike but on a stationary bike. Sometimes the classes can become monotonous and boring. As a spin class is not a real race, you don’t have to push yourself to the extreme.

How to Start Spinning?
It is very important that you join a spin class where you will be working out under an experienced instructor. It is a very hard workout, so in the beginning you will struggle with the pace and stamina, but later on you will develop both. Make sure you carry a water bottle to the class with you to keep yourself hydrated. Carry a small hand towel with you, as you will be sweating a lot during this class. Also, you will need to keep wiping the sweat from your brow as the salty sweat can sting your eyes. Make sure you do a good warm up before the spinning starts to prevent any muscle injuries or soreness. Remember to perform stretching exercises and techniques after you are done with your workout, to improve your flexibility. Stretching will also help you to relax.

This was all about spinning class. Calories burned during spinning exercises, as mentioned earlier, are very high, but to get into that high pace of bicycling you will need to keep going to your classes regularly. So remember, the first few classes of spinning will be tough, but once you develop the speed and stamina you will be able to burn those excess calories easily, and train well for races.

My Tummy Feels Up In the Air; How Many Calories Are Really Fair? : Calorie Calculator for All

January 23, 2011
By

Did you ever try to calculate, how many calories should I eat a day to lose weight?” Wondering the calorie count you need to use up every day to maintain your weight? A caloric intake of about 1500 calories per day for an average woman and 2000 calories per day for an average man is a reasonable figure. The percentage of error in using these numbers is high in those who are not average. You will have to do a little math to evaluate the correct number for your body.

There is a simple method, based on the Harris-Benedict principle, which will assist you to determine your BMR. Once you have assessed you BMR, you can then design a schedule for your proper caloric intake either to lose, gain, or maintain weight.

Calculating Your BMR

Your BMR is the minimum amount of energy required to sustain essential functions such as breathing and circulation, without performing any exercise or any other workout.

For Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 W) + (4.7 H) C (4.7 A)
For Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 W) + (12.7 H) – (6.8 A)
Where W = Weight in pounds, H = Height in inches, and A = Age in years.
A man with a weight of 195.2 pounds, height of 70 inches, and age of 29 would have a BMR of 1973.89. (BMR = 66 + (6.23 x 195.2) + (12.7 x 70) – (6.8 x 29) = 1,973.89)

Calculating Your Daily Activity

The last part for calorie calculator is the multiplication of BMR with a numerical factor that represents your activity level.

* You tend to sit most of the time, with no major activity: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.2
* You engage yourself in light workouts and sport: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.37
* You are into moderate, balanced physical activity: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.55
* You are full of tough dynamics: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.725
* The above mentioned example can be easily understood to estimate your BMR, and multiply it with a suitable number that represents your activity level.

To gain weight, eat food with high level of calories; to lose weight, eat foods with low level of calories.

Eating to Lose Weight

Using up 3500 calories is required to gain one pound of muscle. The lower level of caloric intake is essential for the purpose of losing weight. This can be done by cutting down on calories.

BMR is recalculated after losing weight in order to find out the calories that are needed to maintain the current weight. The complication about “how many calories should i eat a day?” is now resolved.

Count Calories – Calorie Restriction is Vital for Effective Diets

January 21, 2011
By

The simple fact of weight loss is we must count calories.

Why do we deny ourselves effective diets when the simple facts are staring us down and undressing our voluptuous Rubinesque bodies with their cold appraising eyes? I reckon it’s because calorie restriction, both in what we eat and our portion sizes is somehow seen as a type of deprivation.

So many aspects of our lives in these modern times are so easy, so immediate. We have labor saving “this” and immediate gratification “that”. Sadly our body design and function predate these modern conveniences.

The fact that we have to work hard to maintain a healthy body through nutritious diet and regular exercise goes against our “I want it, I’m going to have it right now” mentality.

Now, there are diet purveyors who claim you can lose fat fast without calorie restriction, without exercise, without hunger – no calorie count.

Actually these claims are simply without any base in fact and therefore without success. Don’t waste your valuable time and hard won cash. You deserve to succeed and you will if you can just learn to live with the fact that you cannot have an effective diet without sensible calorie restriction.

It is simple and unfortunately indisputable logic.

To lose weight on any one of a number of effective diets, you must take in less energy than your body needs. Whether you want to count calories or points or units or grams, you have to accurately measure your food portions and balance them against your daily energy output. To make calorie restriction easier for you, you should treat your intended improvement in diet and exercise regime as a bit of a long term hobby.

Take away your “desperate to lose weight” scenario and replace it with a “determined to have permanent weight loss” mindset. Inform yourself by finding out as much as you can about correct nutrition and how to balance the essential elements of your diet. Get familiar with your body type and work out what combination of exercises are best for you.

Record your daily statistics; weight and fat. Chart your journey. Note setbacks and work out the reasons (not excuses) for them. They will happen again.

Devise strategies to cope with your setbacks, so that they don’t do your head in and send you reeling for your emergency ration of cream donuts. When you embark on a weight loss diet you have to see it as a fresh start; it’s not a free ride. And it is going to work for you if you are sensible and logical about it.

Wii Doesn’t Burn That Many More Calories

January 21, 2011
By

What ever happened to the days when a bodybuilder, fitness enthusiast, weight trainer, etc., put on their best pair of workout gloves and hit the “cold iron” to gain quality weight, build muscle mass and burn fat? It seems that now a days society in general is looking for any little excuse to not partake in the one activity that has proven for hundreds of years to be one of the few ways to completely change the look of your body: intense weight lifting via a proper workout routine.

With the release of the Nintendo Wii, which is hyped as being an excellent form of “working out” because of the physical activity that most of the games entail, many are now fooling themselves into believing that they’ll be able to build muscle mass…while beating their buddy at some baseball video game. But they are wrong.

According to Men’s Health, in the British Medical Journal they say that “a few sets of Wii Sports tennis…burns almost eighty percent more calories hour compared with an Xbox session.” Now, you may quickly jump to the conclusion of “Wow! Burn eighty percent more calories per hour with the Wii!! Sweet! Now I can go fork over five hundreds dollars of my hard earned cash.”. Don’t jump so fast, my friend. Yes, it may be eighty percent more, but eighty percent of what?

The magazine continues, “That’s about an extra calorie a minute (which would be just sixty more calories an hour), which is the equivalent to the difference between standing versus sitting”. Sixty measly calories more. Sorry to tell you, but that isn’t anything. Sixty calories is about one plum. Big deal.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I feel that anything that actually has you doing something physical is better than just having you sitting there, plopped on the couch, with the only thing being your thumbs getting trained. But, if true muscle building and weight gaining is what you’re after, stick to the dumbbells. Only an intense, hard workout program that’s properly put together is going to give you the physique you’re after.

I mean, really, how many people do you know that have built a bodybuilder type body from playing the Nintendo Wii?

Pomelos or pummelo is the largest fruit of the citrus family that is native to countries like Asia, Malaysia, Tahiti, New Guinea and Fiji. The fruit is known by several other names like Chinese grapefruit, jabong, lusho fruit, pompelmous, papanas, and shaddock. The fruit is called shaddock after the sea captain from England, Captain Shaddock who was responsible for starting the plantation of the fruit in the Caribbean after he brought it there from the Malay archipelago. The pomelo is larger than a grapefruit with thick skin; the measurement of the the fruit can be almost 15 – 25 cm in diameter and usually weighs around 1 – 2 kgs. The rind of this pear shaped fruit is generally pale green in color which turns yellow when it is fully ripe. The flesh of the fruit is white and in rare cases, pink or red flesh. Pomelo is known to be extremely nutritious and is favorite with people on diets. This is mainly because pomelo calories are very low and the fruit has a very high content of vitamin C.

Pomelo trees are mostly grown in tropical climates and the fruits ripen in winters. NY Restaurants Made to Count the Calories

January 21, 2011
By

It was the first city in America to ban trans-fats from food outlets. Now New York has set another US first – from today, larger food chains such as McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks must display the calories of their products on menus.

The new rules apply to all chains with at least 15 outlets across the country – which in the case of New York accounts for 2,000 restaurants.

The city authorities say the reform will help New Yorkers get a better sense of what they are eating as part of the ongoing battle against obesity and diabetes.

Over the next five years, the city says, the labeling will help prevent 130,000 New Yorkers from becoming obese and 30,000 from developing diabetes.

Some New York outlets had already begun to show calorie counts on their menu boards by the end of last week. At Chipotle, a Mexican food chain, in midtown Manhattan, chips were showing an alarming 570 calories, guacamole 140 and tacos with all the trimmings up to 590.

Standing in the queue to pick up her food, Elissa was aware of the changes and was using the calorie guide to make her choice, mindful that she is trying to consume no more than 1,500 calories a day.

But with the calorie count for salads listed as between 155 and 823, she was a bit perplexed.

“If I order the 823 calories I’ll be pissed,” she said. “That would be half my daily intake.”

Todd, by contrast, hadn’t noticed the new calorie counts on the wall despite this being his regular weekly lunch spot, and was utterly unaware of the city’s impending innovation. Does he watch his intake? “No, but I should do.”

The umbrella group of the city’s outlets, the New York State Restaurant Association, went to court last week to try to block the changes. It argued that the rule was an infringement of the first amendment, which prevents government messages being forced onto businesses.

However, the judge found that the new rules were part of a reasonable public interest in providing customers with accurate nutritional information.

Next door to Chipotle, Starbucks had also started to display its calories. That revealed that a venti Java chip frappucino packs in 600 calories. McDonald’s had yet to post its counts. From today, all eyes will be on its outlets, together with the other fast-food chains. If they fail to meet the regulations by June 3 they will face fines.
