Everybody knows that calories are the enemy, and that more calories equals more weight gained. Therefore, most people believe that losing weight is as simple as cutting way back on calories.

It’s just simple mathematics, right?

After all, if you’re eating 3,000 calories per day and you cut back to 1,000 calories per day, then those extra 2,000 calories have to be burned from your body, right?

It’s as simple as 2 + 2 equals 4, right? Well, this is not exactly true.

First, let’s talk about the average person who begins a diet. The scenario usually goes something like this…

One day you look in the mirror and you finally get fed up with the way your body looks (or the way that your clothes fit) – and on this day you get “angry” with yourself, and you begin cutting way back on calories in an attempt to starve yourself thinner.

So you officially begin your “starvation diet.”

On the first day you skip breakfast altogether (after all, you’re so filled with anger and motivation that it’s easy to skip breakfast).

Then, a few hours later your motivation quickly gives way to severe hunger – since your body is not accustomed to being without calories for so long.

Finally, by lunchtime you’re so hungry that you feel weak and miserable, but yet you tell yourself that you can make it through this tough hunger (after all, you don’t want to look like a quitter to your friends and family who know that you’re dieting).

So you have a small piece of fruit for lunch perhaps, bravely trying to stick to your plan of starving yourself thin.

Then, hours later when dinnertime arrives you’re so hungry and weak that you have a big migraine headache – and you’re beginning to realize that starving yourself might not be such a good idea after all.

However, you try to hold out for another day or two on this miserable diet – since nobody likes to feel like a quitter.

So you’ll probably hold out for another day or two, making yourself miserable in the meantime.

There are even some brave dieters who may hold out for a week or so, possibly even 2 weeks for the bravest of dieters.

However, regardless of how long you hold out — the result is still the same.

You see, even after 2 weeks of starving you won’t have made any noticeable difference to your body when you look in the mirror.

Why?

Simple, because the weight lost during a starvation diet is largely water weight, not real weight loss. This water weight will be gained back immediately when you stop dieting and begin eating normally again.

Also, when you starve yourself your body begins burning fewer calories each day — so even though you’re eating fewer calories each day you must remember that your body is also burning fewer calories.

For example, let’s say that you normally eat 2,500 calories per day (before you begin dieting). Then, you suddenly try to starve yourself by eating only 1,000 calories per day.

Guess what?

Even though you’re eating 1,500 fewer calories per day your body will begin burning 1,500 fewer calories per day – so your weight will remain the same even though you’re starving yourself.

When your body begins burning fewer calories it’s called a weight loss “plateau.” This is why virtually all starvation dieters cannot make the scale go down after about 2 weeks of dieting.

This is why even the most determined of “starvation dieters” always fail after just a couple of weeks.

The truth is that “noticeable” weight loss simply cannot be achieved by starvation, and it’s pointless to even try that type of diet.

True weight loss can only be achieved by giving your body the right types of calories at the right times each day. Your body is like a big engine, and the truth is that it needs all 3 types of calories (protein, carbs, and fat) to some degree.

The best way to lose weight is to effectively manage these 3 types of calories, so that your body receives the proper amount of protein, the proper amount of carbs – and also the proper amount of fat each day.

Gastric Band Surgery Is A Popular But Not Always Advisable Option

Since it was approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drink Administration (FDA) in 2001, the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band has become a firm favorite as the safest and least invasive of all forms of weight loss surgery. However, despite its popularity, the gastric band is not suitable for everyone.

The list of contraindications for the use of the gastric band is lengthy, but here are just a few of the more commonly seen reasons for refusing gastric band surgery.

Reason 1. You are suffering from an inflammatory disease or other condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers or Crohn’s disease, a condition affecting the small intestine and, on occasions, the colon.

Reason 2. You are at risk of developing bleeding within the esophagus or the stomach as the result of such conditions as esophageal or gastric varices (dilated veins).

Reason 3. You are suffering from portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is a condition in which, for example as a result of venous obstruction, pressure builds up in the group of veins which carry blood from the stomach, intestine, spleen and pancreas to the liver.

Reason 4. You are suffering from cirrhosis, a condition resulting in widespread disruption to the normal structure of the liver and caused by a variety of chronic and progressive conditions including long-term alcohol abuse and hepatitis.

Reason 5. You are suffering from chronic pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, which secretes digestive enzymes into the intestine to break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

Reason 6. You are undergoing long-term steroid treatment.

Reason 7. You have suffered a gastric injury, such as gastric perforation, as a result of previous surgery and the site of this injury is close to the intended location for gastric band placement.

Reason 8. You have an esophagus, stomach or intestine which, either since birth or subsequently, is abnormal. This might for example include such things as a narrowed opening into the stomach or from the stomach into the intestine.

Reason 9. You are pregnant or are contemplating pregnancy.

Reason 10. You are addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Any one of these reasons, and several others, would rule out the possibility of gastric band surgery but perhaps the most important reason of all for excluding you from surgery would be a lack of motivation. Any form of weight loss surgery can present a host of problems, including considerable problems in adjusting to a new lifestyle following surgery, and your surgeon will normally only permit you to go forward with gastric banding if he is fully satisfied that you have the right motivation.

Being a workaholic is a challenge. It becomes the default setting we return to when life gets tricky or you stop focusing on the life you want. The problem with only using your ability to “focus” is that it requires constant effort and it fails to get to the underlying causes which are usually about the our beliefs.

Let me use a different example, but one where there is a very close parallel – Loosing weight.

Our desire to loose weight drives a multi billion pound industry in the Western world. There are thousands of different diets, books, exercise programmes and videos all giving wonderful advice. They are usually telling us what we already know.

Being a healthy weight is just an equation. Take in more calories than you use in physical activity and you are guaranteed to put on weight. Use more calories through physical activity than you eat and you will loose weight. If it is so simple, why are so many people still significantly overweight?

Many people get as far as buying the product and, by doing so, feel good for a short while because they believe they have at least taken action.

The same principle is true of gym membership. People sign on for a six month or year long membership and buy all the right gear. They go once, or a few times, find it hard or boring, maybe pull a muscle and then give up.

Specialized food is available in thousands of different guises – yet more people in the western world are over weight or clinically obese than at any time in history.

We are being bombarded with information, think of all the TV reality shows showing obese people fighting their flab or makeover programmes where people have radical surgery to address the problem. Is it addressing the problem?

When I talk and work with people who are overweight and get to the heart of the matter, without exception they have a proven track record of being able to lose weight. Indeed many of them have lost their body weight several times over in their lifetime.

The problem does not lie with their ability to lose the pounds. It is about how they feel about themselves and the relationship they have created with food. The issue is how to enjoy food and maintain a healthy weight whilst feeling good about yourself.

The weight loss might be somewhat slower but it doesn’t rely on willpower in the same way. They are able to create a life style change which is lasting and doesn’t require a huge investment of willpower.

The principles about changing your work life balance are no different. If you want true fulfillment and a great work life balance, where you feel in control, you need to look at why you are driven to work such long hours.
Think about the benefits of letting work take over your life.
Think of the costs to your health, your sense of wellbeing, your relationships with family and friends of letting work take over your life. What has it cost you?
Think about the balance between the costs and benefits of continuing with your present life.
Does it serve you in the short term? How about over your life as a whole?
