Weight Loss Tips – How To Lose Weight And Keep It Off

January 25, 2011
By

If you are overweight, then you know how hard life can be. It hurts to walk or climb stairs, you get winded just walking down the street and you think that everyone is looking at you and laughing. This is no way to live your life. It is time to make some major life changes and lose the excess weight. Read on to discover some things that you can do right away to start the weight loss process.

First of all, slow down when you are eating. Instead of shoveling the food into your mouth as fast as your arm will bend, slow down and chew your food thoroughly. Some people have success with counting how many times they chew a piece of food. Take your time when you eat and give your stomach a chance to signal your brain that you are getting full.

Here is one that no one likes to hear, but it is critical to losing weight. Start moving. Get some kind of exercise. Just starting by lifting light hand weights while sitting at your desk or on the sofa will help. Then gradually increase your exercise routine so that you are able to walk or use a stationary bike. Purchasing a good treadmill so that you can walk no matter what the weather is a great idea. The more you exercise the more you will lose. Going for a half hour walk four to five times a week will make a big difference to your overall health.

Change your eating habits. Don’t eat just because you are hungry. Start eating four to six small meals throughout the day. Eat small portions of fresh fruit and vegetables. Have lean meat and fish. Stay away from excess bread and pasta because these will pack on the pounds. You will find that by eating small meals throughout the day you won’t feel hungry and you will lose weight. You’ll also be keeping your metabolism humming along at a steady pace.

Consider what you are drinking. Do you drink a lot of soda throughout the day? If so, change to diet soda and cut back on the number of sodas that you drink. Drink more water. This will help you to burn fat and lose weight. If you don’t like plain water, try some of the flavored waters that are available. Stay away from excessive alcohol consumption.

Don’t diet, make a lifestyle change. Crash diets or fad diets will get you nowhere if you go back to your old eating habits. Become committed to eating healthier for the rest of your life. Once the weight comes off, you will be able to keep it off with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise. You will also feel better and your confidence level will soar.

So there you have some great tips on how to lose weight and most importantly, how to keep it off. Start using these tips right away and you may be surprised at the results that you achieve!

Could My Thyroid Be My Problem?

January 23, 2011
By

The one gland that causes havoc with weight, allergies, and energy, can be the relatively easy to fix. However, it is usually the gland that is most often overlooked. This gland is your thyroid. The thyroid gland produces hormones T4 and T3, whose main purpose is to “run the body’s metabolism”. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and weighs less than one ounce. It is hard to imagine that a gland this small affects almost every organ and system in the body, from the rate of your heart beat, to your mood and energy levels; and even to how fast you burn calories.

When your body does not produce enough thyroid hormone, its normal rate of function slows, causing mental and physical sluggishness. This underproduction is known as Hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism are vast and range from fatigue, headaches, depression, anxiety, weight gain, joint pain, infertility, heart disease, irritability, impaired memory, poor circulation and the list goes on.

The good news is that Hypothyroidism is easy to correct, if it is detected. Most physicians recognize the significance of testing TSH to check thyroid levels. When your TSH is high, thyroid function is proportionally low. Measuring TSH levels is a good start but it doesn’t give a complete picture. It is also important to check T3 Free, and T4 Free levels. Testing T3 Free and T4 Free gives a better sense of which hormones needs adjusting.

In some cases, patients will present with symptoms of an under active thyroid, but all labs TSH, T3 Free and T4 Free are normal. In this case, I believe it is important to treat the patient’s symptoms on an empirical basis. When the blood work does not show a problem with the thyroid gland, I may utilize another form of testing known as the Biological Terrain. It is also important to test other hormones for dysfunction. When thyroid hormone is dys-regulated it may be compensating for other hormonal imbalances such as your adrenals or insulin status. Until medical technology creates a more precise lab to gauge the activity of the thyroid gland, we cannot overlook symptoms the patient is experiencing.

Many doctors will prescribe synthetic T4, such as Synthroid or Levoxyl, in response to labs that indicate a high TSH level. This will work if the patient has no difficulty converting T4 into T3. For those who have problems converting T4 to T3, adding Cytomel, which improves T3 levels, may be beneficial in correcting the problem.

Another option is to use prescription natural thyroid (eg. Armour Thyroid) which replaces both T3 and T4. It is made from desiccated beef or pork thyroid glands and is fully standardized by USP (United States Pharmacopeia). Armour natural thyroid was the most common form of thyroid replacement in the 1970’s, until synthetic alternatives became available. It is still used today and often yields great results. Another option I may use is Thyroid Complex, an enzyme based supplement that offers a natural solution. This product contains thyroid proteins rather than the actual hormone.

The overall treatment goal is to restore balance to your body’s metabolic function. Assessing the entire picture and taking into consideration both lab values and patient symptoms to customize a treatment plan, yield the best results.

How to Measure the Progress of Your Health and Fitness Program

January 23, 2011
By

People tend to measure success in different ways. It can be wealth, family relationships or personal happiness. But when it comes to measuring the success of your health and fitness program what is successful and what is not. Certainly one measure is the lack of illness or long term medical issues. Another can be the number of healthy living habits you have acquired or the loss of weight that you set out to achieve. People may be commenting on how good you look. These are all ways to determine if your program is working or not.

Medium and short term changes can also be measured in your health and fitness program as well as long term changes mentioned above. Perhaps you were on medication or prescription drugs that you no longer need. Because you now exercise regularly you may feel more limber and able to easily perform physical tasks that were difficult for you in the past. Another measure can be in the diet you now eat. You find yourself eating fewer foods that are high in fat and more that are nutritious and high in fiber, vitamins and minerals.

DIET IS VERY IMPORTANT

There are two important measures in the progress that you are making in your eating habits toward a healthier lifestyle. You may notice that you have become wiser in the way that you prepare foods. You may have substituted bad fats that you used in cooking with healthier fats such as olive oil or other oils that are derived from plants. You may be more aware and have a better understanding about food labeling. This is an area that we have made great progress in over recent years. We now have a better understanding about what is in the foods that we eat and what to is good and bad for us. You may have even substituted one brand to another healthier one.

Another way to determine the success of your health and fitness program is a physical measure of you waistline. Diseases such as diabetes and heart disease have been associated with abdominal fat. Any reduction can result in an improved body fat distribution.

BE AWARE OF BODY FAT

Another good measure of your progress would be your total body fat. There are several ways to measure this, the simplest and most accessible method would be skin fold calipers. While methods such as hydrostatic weighing or electrical impedance are much more accurate they are really not necessary. Skin fold calipers will give you a good staring point and way to measure your progress.

Regardless of how you choose to measure your progress you should never rely on total body weight and a scale. This is a mistake that many make as body weight may have been the factor that initiated them to start their health and fitness program from the start. Total weight is only a combination of total body fat and your lean body weight. The more important measure is the ratio between the two. Many times people can have the same weight and one will be in much better shape that the other.

If you rely on weight as a measure of progress you may become unnecessarily discouraged at your efforts and have the tendency to forego your program. You have to realize that weight is not a measure of body composition. You can look at the fact that you lost a few pounds but you do not know if that was a loss in muscle and water or a more meaningful loss in fat. Or you can weight the same and have made progress because you have actually lost fat and replaced it with muscle that will help to continue to burn more fat. So it is more effective to measure the success or failure of any health and fitness program by metrics other than weight.

Sound Nutrition For Athletes Can Be Healthy Snacks That Taste Good

January 23, 2011
By

Fortunately, for those who are active, quality nutrition for athletes and healthy snacks that actually taste good are becoming more common. While there are still foul tasting protein powders and other traditional supplements, finding the right nutrition for athletes can be a much tastier experience than it was in the past. Whether you create your own healthy snacks or buy something prepackaged, it’s easier now to find a treat that will appeal to your taste buds, as well as your athletic lifestyle.

The most natural nutrition for athletes can be obtained from freshly made fruit or herbal juice drinks. Blending them yourself is not only easy, but ensures that you are completely aware of the ingredients going into your healthy snacks. Choosing organic apples, carrots, beets, and other fresh fruits and vegetables guarantees not only the highest quality natural nutrition for athletes, but it also decreases exposure to pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals. For an added treat, consider freezing your juice in popsicles for healthy snacks that cool you down after a workout. To increase the performance enhancement aspect of your homemade nutrition for athletes try adding all natural food concentrates. These usually include an abundance of complex carbs and are easier than ever to find on the Internet.

Nuts and seeds provide more than just great nutrition for athletes and are versatile enough to make a variety of delicious, healthy snacks. A simple granola mix with some raw almonds and raisins can give you a potent boost throughout the day. In addition to flavor you’ll gain a good mix of protein and essential fatty acids for top form. Keep in mind that raw nuts are usually healthier than those that have been roasted, and of course, unsalted nuts have less sodium.

Another way to create healthy snacks that provide excellent nutrition for athletes is to make your own smoothies. By mixing bananas and other fruits with those all natural food concentrates mentioned before, you can make a delicious treat that is also very powerful. Instead of the additional fruit, try adding organic peanut butter. You’ll be surprised at the great taste and your body will appreciate the increase in “good” fats. When it comes to great-tasting nutrition for athletes, smoothies are hard to beat for a quick blast of complex carbs.

Purchasing prepackaged healthy snacks requires careful evaluation. Reading the nutrition information on any prepackaged food item should simply become second nature if you are really serious about finding the highest quality nutrition for athletes.

Things to look out for on the nutrition facts label include sodium and sugar levels – in addition to the standard protein and carb counts. Most of the nutrition for athletes available today focuses on high protein and carbohydrates for peak performance, but there are other important considerations. Many of the mainstream options actually provide excess protein for anyone except serious bodybuilders and often have high sodium and sugar, which can disrupt the balance of electrolytes in the body. Truly healthy snacks are those that include whole food sources, not chemically “isolated” proteins and vitamins. Keeping these things in mind, it’s relatively simple now to search the Internet for pre-packaged all natural food concentrates that are not only healthy snacks, but also provide serious nutrition for athletes.

Are Your Body Care Products Killing Your Skin?

Are Your Body Care Products Killing Your Skin?

Every day, millions of people are using products on their bodies. Products to cleanse, products to moisturize, and products to make the body smell good are being used more today than any other time in history.

Both men and women have a constant barrage of marketing aimed at them concerning products to use on their bodies. Within the last decade, mens body care products have become the norm, rather than the exception.

Today, at least with younger men, you will be hard pressed to find someone who is not using some type of product designed especially for use on mens bodies. These products are well known for their masculine fragrance.

So, what do you know about these products? Products for both men and women have their biggest selling point through fragrance. How many times have you been in to purchase shampoo and found yourself (or seen another customer) opening lids and smelling the product?

Of course, the scent has absolutely nothing to do with how well the product actually cleanses the hair. The scent is a major marketing ploy; one that works very well. That scent is artificial and if you begin asking people around you, you will find that many of them are allergic to these artificial fragrances. Sometimes, they cannot even be around someone who has fragrance like these on their body.

One of the things that you need to be able to do is read your labels. This is not to imply that you do not know how to read; you need to be able to understand how the ingredient labeling process is done and what the ingredients mean to you.

Ingredients are listed in the order of volume used in the formula for the product. This means that the first ingredient is the biggest amount of the product. In many products, you will find that this first ingredient is water; if you read your shampoo label and see that water is first, you know that the shampoo is more water than anything else. This process of listing ingredients is common to all of your body care products.

Aside from understanding how the listing works in reference to the amount of each ingredient, you should know about certain ingredients. Remember that not all ingredients are actually good for your skin, even though the product has been marketed for use on the skin. Your body will appreciate you for paying more attention to what your purchase for your body care products.

If possible, you should buy certified organic products. These products do not carry hidden dangers from man made chemicals. If it is not possible for you, you will want to take care to buy body care products that are free of certain ingredients. These ingredients include:

Mineral Oil: this ingredient actually catches environmental debris and mixes with it, clogging pores and causing blackheads, whiteheads, and irritation. Because of the trapping tendency of mineral oil, toxins are attached to your skin which can result in faster signs of aging.

Wax: this substance should be used sparingly. It is almost impossible to avoid using a total skin care system that is completely wax free, but you should know that wax can clog pores. As with mineral oil, this clogging results in blackheads and whiteheads. Unlike mineral oil, wax does not tend to attract environmental debris and trap it in pores. Wax is often found in body care products that are creamy.

Lanolin: the biggest problem with lanolin is that it can be an allergen. If you are experiencing irritated skin, this may be the reason.

Acetone: this toxic substance strips the skin of essential natural oils. Wrinkles result faster through this excessive dryness.

Alcohol: this may be listed as ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or SD alcohol 40. Like acetone, alcohol strips the skin of its essential natural oils. Again, the excessive dryness causes wrinkles to appear earlier than they would otherwise.

Artificial coloring: often, the base use to create artificial colorants is actually toxic.

Petrolatum or other derivatives of petroleum: your skin is not able to absorb these ingredients, and they act as attractants to environmental debris. BlackheadsFeature Articles

Keeping a careful eye on labels will help you avoid many of the skin irritations that are quite common today. You will also prevent premature aging because you are not using ingredients that accelerate your skins genetically planned aging process by trapping toxins on your skin and in your pores or by over drying your skin.

The Poop Question: What Happens After You Flush?

The Poop Question: What Happens After You Flush?

Have you ever wondered what happens to your poop after you flush the toilet?  We’ve got the answer to this small mystery and a complete explanation of how wastewater treatment works.

It might be something you’ve never considered, or it might be a question you’ve never had the guts to ask.  Either way, it’s one of life’s little curiosities: what happens to our waste after we flush the toilet?  Where does it go?  Many of us may be aware that cities and municipalities in the United States run wastewater treatment plants where sewage is processed, but few of us have any real understanding of what these facilities do.  In this article, we are going to shed some light on the mystery of where all our poop goes after the toilet is flushed.

The goal of any wastewater treatment plant is the same: to change contaminated water into water that is safe to be discharged back into the environment.  Wastewater entering a sewage treatment plant may be contaminated with physical debris such as cans or bottles, chemical pollutants like household cleaners, and biological contaminants, including the pathogens from our waste.  All these contaminants must be removed before the water is considered clean and non-toxic.  To this end, wastewater will go through various processes usually referred to as primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment.

Primary treatment can be thought of as the “settling” stage.  Wastewater is placed in very large sedimentation tanks where sludge settles to the bottom and grease and oils rise up to the top.  The sludge is removed so that it can be separately processed, and the grease and oil are skimmed away.  The end result is a homogenous liquid that moves into the secondary stage of treatment.

Secondary treatment removes the biological contaminants that are polluting the water, or at least reduces them to an acceptable level.  Quite simply, this is done by exposing the water to various types of bacteria that literally eat the pathogens out of the water.  There are different types of processes to accomplish this, but the majority of wastewater treatment plants use aerobic processing.  This means that the bacteria need oxygen in order to break down the pathogens in the water.  In aerobic processing, the water will need to be aerated so as to provide sufficient oxygen to the bacteria.

Tertiary treatment can mean a number of different things, and so any process that takes place after secondary treatment is generally considered tertiary treatment.  Some examples of tertiary treatments might include filtering the water to further remove any suspended matter.  Additional reduction of biological or chemical contaminants would also be a type of tertiary process.  If wastewater has a high level of nutrients such as nitrogen or phosphorus, then it may need to undergo tertiary treatment to remove the excess nutrients so as to prevent algal blooms once the water is released back into the environment.  Excessive algae growth on water is a problem because it deoxygenizes the water to the point that fish and other wildlife can’t survive.

You may be wondering what happens to the sludge that was removed in the first step of the process.  Sludge is decomposed by bacteria, similar to the bacteria that remove pathogens from wastewater in secondary treatment.  This decomposition can be either aerobic or anaerobic, but the purpose is always the same: to reduce the volume of matter and to reduce the number of pathogens in the material that could cause disease.  Disposal of the finished sludge varies.  Traditionally, most wastewater treatment plants would truck the material to a landfill and dispose of it.  However, today some plants are beginning to sell the material to companies that turn it into fertilizers that can be applied to farmland.

So that’s the answer to the poop question!  Wastewater treatment isn’t something that many of us care to consider, but it is a very necessary process.  In developing countries where wastewater treatment isn’t regulated, there are devastating effects to the environment and public health caused by exposure to contaminated water.  In shortArticle Submission Article Tags:
