January 25, 2011
By

It may be hard for you to select the right weight loss program since there are already many of them active in the market nowadays. Let’s have a closer glimpse at Tom Venuto’s ‘Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle’. Review the pros and cons below to decide if this program is right for you.

Pro: A very personalized method to weight loss is provided in this program.

This program is so-called a body kind dieting. The assumption is that people of different body types process foods in different ways. For instance, one body type might do better on a diet heavy in complex carbohydrates, while another body type might need a much lower carb intake in order to prosper.

Included in this program is the means to check your body type. To create your fitness and diet plans based on your body type, relevant information will then be supplied to you. As you progress, you can adjust your calories and nutrition as needed. The expected outcome of this very individualized plan is more weight loss than a generic one.

Pro: It has various nutritional information which are helpful.

Information related to the nutrition needed by your individual body type is demonstrated in this system. Venuto delves into the facts about macronutrients, vitamins, and calories. In fact, nutrition topics are discussed on the 270 pages of the core book.

There are comprehensive guides to aid you identify your base metabolic rate and caloric needs.

Pro: You can even procure supplemental information of your own choice.

Aside from securing the core book, procuring of auxiliary information is possible like purchasing a series of author interviews and subscribing to Venuto’s website. Aside from having bonuses with high quality, the website also contains countless reading materials suited for many months of reading. The website also is characterized by the presence of calculators, recipes, and product reviews. The message forums are active and filled with answers and advice.

The level of information would be helpful to someone who need to reshape their life and body, but might be not suitable for casual dieters.

The Other Side of the ‘Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle’ Program.

Con: It’s not for casual dieters.

By reading this ‘Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle’ review, you’ve potentially saved yourself a lot of time – the core book is 341 pages long! It does not even count the many extras you obtain with the package, and the upgrades that you can buy separately. Casual dieters might be drowned by the sheer amount of information.

Venuto writes like a bodybuilder because he is a bodybuilder. That is, he accentuates the importance of having a low body fat percentage. The competitive bodybuilding data, though appears to be heavy-handed, is informative.

Con: Exercise is not widely discussed.

Despite the importance of exercise in weight loss and bodybuilding, Venuto devotes most of his pages to nutrition facts. Weight training as well as cardio exercise has 25 pages only.

Although Venuto goes into the details how exercise affects the body, yet he only suggests exercises without teaching the reader how to do them. Though the book includes sample workouts but they just look like lists than step-by-step instructions.

One bonus: If you’ve ever wondered about weightlifting, you can probably find the answers to all your questions in the weightlifting FAQ.

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle Review – The Bottom Line.

‘Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle’ is a unique product. Due to its comprehensive approach in losing weight, many people have become its loyal followers. Though it may not be the appropriate alternative if you just aim in losing few pounds, it will serve as your guide in maintaining a healthy body.

Spinning Class: Calories Burned at Spin Class

January 23, 2011
By

Jonny G, a world famous cyclist, was the first to introduce spinning programs as a quick and efficient way to train for races. In the year 1983, he with John Baudhuin opened the world’s first spinning class in California, and later on developed an exercise program which certified other spinning instructors. So, what is so great about spinning class? Calories burned in spinning class are very high, apart from the fact that these classes also help you to train for races. Let us look a what is a spin class, the amount of spinning class calories burned and the pros and cons of these aerobic exercises.

What is a Spin Class?
For spinning, specially designed stationary exercise bikes are used, which are also called as spinning bikes. In a spin class, high beat music keeps playing, and there is an instructor who will keep talking to you through visualizations of an outdoor cycling workout. The cycling pace will keep changing in the spin class, sometimes it will be very fast and sometimes it will be pedaling slowly in a standing position. This helps to train the body and mind together for the circumstances that occur during races.

How many Calories Burned by Spinning?
If you are looking for solutions of burning calories fast, then join spinning class. Calories burned in an average 30 minute spinning class session are around 500! Yes, these high intensity cardiovascular exercises allows you to burn a huge amount of calories fast. This all, done with a group, is more fun and easier to achieve.

Pros & Cons of a Spin Class
There are certain pros and cons of spinning workouts. A spin class will allow you to train for a race during an off season. It is a good training session which allows you to increase your endurance. There are various routines designed in a spin class, which makes the class interesting. You can train for the race or workout to burn calories, in a more controlled environment and hence possibility of an injury is reduced. Some of the cons of spinning classes is that they are not actually outdoors on a moving bike but on a stationary bike. Sometimes the classes can become monotonous and boring. As a spin class is not a real race, you don’t have to push yourself to the extreme.

How to Start Spinning?
It is very important that you join a spin class where you will be working out under an experienced instructor. It is a very hard workout, so in the beginning you will struggle with the pace and stamina, but later on you will develop both. Make sure you carry a water bottle to the class with you to keep yourself hydrated. Carry a small hand towel with you, as you will be sweating a lot during this class. Also, you will need to keep wiping the sweat from your brow as the salty sweat can sting your eyes. Make sure you do a good warm up before the spinning starts to prevent any muscle injuries or soreness. Remember to perform stretching exercises and techniques after you are done with your workout, to improve your flexibility. Stretching will also help you to relax.

This was all about spinning class. Calories burned during spinning exercises, as mentioned earlier, are very high, but to get into that high pace of bicycling you will need to keep going to your classes regularly. So remember, the first few classes of spinning will be tough, but once you develop the speed and stamina you will be able to burn those excess calories easily, and train well for races.

My Tummy Feels Up In the Air; How Many Calories Are Really Fair? : Calorie Calculator for All

January 23, 2011
By

Did you ever try to calculate, how many calories should I eat a day to lose weight?” Wondering the calorie count you need to use up every day to maintain your weight? A caloric intake of about 1500 calories per day for an average woman and 2000 calories per day for an average man is a reasonable figure. The percentage of error in using these numbers is high in those who are not average. You will have to do a little math to evaluate the correct number for your body.

There is a simple method, based on the Harris-Benedict principle, which will assist you to determine your BMR. Once you have assessed you BMR, you can then design a schedule for your proper caloric intake either to lose, gain, or maintain weight.

Calculating Your BMR

Your BMR is the minimum amount of energy required to sustain essential functions such as breathing and circulation, without performing any exercise or any other workout.

For Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 W) + (4.7 H) C (4.7 A)
For Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 W) + (12.7 H) – (6.8 A)
Where W = Weight in pounds, H = Height in inches, and A = Age in years.
A man with a weight of 195.2 pounds, height of 70 inches, and age of 29 would have a BMR of 1973.89. (BMR = 66 + (6.23 x 195.2) + (12.7 x 70) – (6.8 x 29) = 1,973.89)

Calculating Your Daily Activity

The last part for calorie calculator is the multiplication of BMR with a numerical factor that represents your activity level.

* You tend to sit most of the time, with no major activity: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.2
* You engage yourself in light workouts and sport: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.37
* You are into moderate, balanced physical activity: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.55
* You are full of tough dynamics: Actual caloric need is BMR 1.725
* The above mentioned example can be easily understood to estimate your BMR, and multiply it with a suitable number that represents your activity level.

To gain weight, eat food with high level of calories; to lose weight, eat foods with low level of calories.

Eating to Lose Weight

Using up 3500 calories is required to gain one pound of muscle. The lower level of caloric intake is essential for the purpose of losing weight. This can be done by cutting down on calories.

BMR is recalculated after losing weight in order to find out the calories that are needed to maintain the current weight. The complication about “how many calories should i eat a day?” is now resolved.

Not Just Known for Goulash: A Tour of Hungarian Wines

January 23, 2011
By
Not Just Known for Goulash: A Tour of Hungarian WinesEnlarge Image

Goulash and Zsa Zsa Gabor—that about sums up Hungarian culture for many Americans. Thankfully, that’s not all Hungary has to offer. With over 500,000 acres of land used for grape growing and wine production, as well as 22 distinct wine regions, Hungary is home to some excellent yet largely undiscovered wines—or as the Magyars call them: bor.

The country’s tradition of winemaking has spanned more than a thousand years. It even survived the Communists’ wreaking havoc on Hungary’s wine culture. Many wineries and vineyards were destroyed during Communism. “Fortunately, there remained a core [group of aficionados] in our society, for whom winemaking is a moral question — something that must be kept alive, — rather than merely a good business,” says Balint Losonci, Editor of Borbarat Magazin, a leading Hungarian wine publication. “And that is a precious heritage, one which must be revitalized.”

And an increasing number of wine producers and loyal consumers are attempting to do just that. “There has been growing emphasis on quality by many young consumers,” Losonci explains, “there are many newborn wine-clubs and wine routes.” And rightfully so: there are hundreds of private Magyar wineries and thousands of winemakers. Hungarian wines are comparable to other Eastern and Central European ones, and much of that resemblance is attributed to similarities in climate and wine preparation methods.

Take the acclaimed Tokay Aszu, for example, a sweet white table wine made in the wine district of Tokaj. Situated on the banks of Lake Balaton, this hillside region is Hungary’s greatest grape producer. The melodiously sweet wine is a favorite in Central Europe and is similar to some German rieslings. “It is concentrated, unique and has a fantastic sweetness-acidity balance that is unrivaled in the world,” says Losonci. According to fable, Franz Joseph gave bottle upon bottle of Aszu to Queen Victoria on her birthday. Even old Louis XIV termed Tokay “the wine of kings; the king of wines.”

The process of making Tokay Aszu is particular and tedious. After the must is perfected, small cloth containers are filled with the sweet pulp and juice of Aszu grapes and added to the wine. The value of Aszu is measured by the number of puttonys, or containers of pulp added—the more puttonys, the better the wine. Aszu is sold in two to six puttonys. The six puttonys, aptly named Tokay Essence, is rarely made and usually reserved for the winemaker’s best friends, celebrities, heads of state, and the like.

An excellent full-bodied red to try is Egri Bikavér, or Bull’s Blood of Eger. Legend says that Bikavér came in handy during the Turks’ occupation of Hungary. In 1552, the long-bearded Ali Pasha and over 100,000 of his soldiers attempted to take over the fortress of Eger. Bikavér-drinking Magyar soldiers – all 2,000 of them – triumphantly defended the fort. Much of their success is attributed to Bull’s Blood and its legendary powers to turn even the weakest of men into heroes. As such, this hearty wine is not for sissies, pansies or cowards. Turks may drink it in moderation.

For something different, try the semi-light Badacsonyi Szürke Barát, or Grey Friar of Badacsony, a delightful Pinot Gris. Or opt for Hajos-Bajai Kekfrankos Ausbruch, a ripe, fruity and rich red.

With great taste and ample variety, it’s a wonder Hungarian wines are not more popular around the world. The problem is in marketing and production, says Losonci. “Every wine region [that is] successful has to make its reference wine.” The focus has shifted from mass wine production to uniqueness and quality, resulting in increased interest from foreign investors. New products are being tested and developed, their quality at par with other Western wines. Once those new bottles are marketed, Magyar wines will popularize.

“Until then, [the focus is] on wine tourism, as there are some wonderful sights and places in our country with added wine-culture,” Losonci explains. Lake Balaton is a prime example: a place frequented by foreign visitors for its beautiful scenery and soothing waters, the mountainous terrain surrounding the Lake is also home to some of the country’s best vineyards and winemakers. Tourism will not only bring potential consumers, but also introduce Hungarian wines to potential investors, many of whom are finally getting familiar with Magyar culture.

Quality Hungarian wines are a lesser-known option for wine aficionados who crave something different. With better marketing and newfound focus on quality, Magyar wines are sure to become more popular in the near future. After all, as the Magyars say, “A Magyar bor verre valik”—”Wine made in Hungary turns into blood upon consumption.”

Burn Off The Belly Fat With These Four Common Spices!

January 23, 2011
By

Spices, we all have them in our cupboards, but for most people, we think of them in terms of flavor enhancers only. Most of us think we get our nutrition from meat, vegetables and fruit. But don’t underestimate the power of spices. You would be amazed at the nutrient value they have and what they can do for our metabolism.

Take cayenne pepper for example. It comes from a vegetable that really is a chili pepper. It is loaded with vitamin A, vitamins C and B6, it has fiber, vitamin K and manganese. Not only is it nutritious, it is a thermogenic food (burning up of calories) that increases metabolism. This is why it is good for weight loss. All hot peppers contain capsaicin. The hotter the chili, the more capsaicin it contains. Fresh chilis are always best but using cayenne pepper daily will not only spice up your favorite foods but will speed up the metabolism which in turn helps you to lose weight.

Cinnamon is not only a delicious spice but has many health benefits. It can reduce bad cholesterol and triglycerides. It also mimics insulin that lowers blood glucose. This is good news for diabetics. A study was done by the USDA Research Center in Maryland where they were testing how certain foods affected the blood sugar levels in the body. When they tested apple pie they were expecting it to spike glucose levels. To their surprise, it actually lowered glucose levels. It was the cinnamon in it that created this unexpected result. For all of us apple pie lovers, this is fantastic news. Dessert is back! Cinnamon also improves blood circulation which in turn increases getting oxygen to the cells of the body. This also increases the metabolism. (Got to love that cinnamon)

Ginger is another favorite for weight loss. According to the International Journal of Obesity, a study was done to see if ginger could help reduce body fat. What they found was that ginger is also a thermogenic food. After eating ginger, tissues in the body used more energy than they normally would have and therefore creating higher metabolism. As with cayenne pepper, ginger also improves circulation. So go ahead and enjoy ginger. If you have never tried it, you can find some good recipes online to experiment with.

Basil is a spice in most people’s cupboards. It is a member of the mint family. This tasty, aromatic spice has anti-bacterial properties. It can be used to wash fruits and vegetables therefore making them safe to eat. It is also high in vitamin A and potassium. As with cinnamon, basil has been shown in tests to reduce glucose levels in the blood. Basil is the main ingredient in pesto and has a wonderful relationship with tomatoes. Basil is a common spice in all Italian foods. Little did we know that basil could help us lose weight.

It is hard for the majority of people to stick to a good diet let alone try to lose weight. A key factor in most weight loss programs is bland tasting food. No one is going to stick to a diet for very long when we are disgusted with what our food choices are. We do have a card to play though and that is tasty, healthy spices! This can make all the difference in our weight loss goals, especially troublesome belly fat. Make your food taste delicious with spices and you will find it much easier to stick to your plan.

Good luck!

The REAL Effects of Alcohol On Your Body

January 22, 2011
By

If you are curious as to the effects of alcohol on the body, this could be the most eye-opening article you will ever read.

Many of us associate the effects of alcohol on the body with the heart, lungs, liver, brain, memory, etc. Furthermore, if asked about effects of drinking alcohol in terms of our fitness goals, most people will let you know about the infamous beer belly.

You know what I’m talking about right?

Drink too much and you end up storing too many calories as fat.

Many people will choose low calorie alcohol drinks or low carb alcoholic beverages in an attempt to avoid the fat storage issue. They feel that by making this choice the only bad effects of alcohol – increased fat storage – will be minimized.

But what you didn’t know is that only about 5% of the calories from alcohol are stored as fat! [14]

Then it hit me as it should hit you right about now…

The effects of alcohol on the body are far more damaging than can be predicted by the number of empty calories in some alcoholic beverage.

The truth is…

1- Alcohol really affects the amount of fat your body can and will burn for energy!

In a study done by the American Journal of Clinical Research [4] they concluded that just a mere 24g of alcohol consumption showed whole-body lipid oxidation ( the rate at which your body burns fat) decreased by a whopping 73%!

When alcohol goes thru the liver, the by-product is called Acetate. It would appear that acetate puts the proverbial brakes on fat burning.

Your body can use many types of fuel. Protein, carbohydrates and fat. In many cases, the fuel used is dictated by it’s availability.

Trouble is…

Your body tends to use whatever you feed it for fuel right? As your acetate levels increase, your body burns more acetate as fuel.

What this means is…

Fat burning takes a back seat!

What it all boils down to is this…

a) You consume a couple of alcoholic drinks or more. b) Your liver metabolizes that into acetate. c) Your body uses the acetate for fat as fuel.

2- Increase in appetite

In another American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study, there was evidence to suggest that consumption of alcohol lead to an increase in appetite over that of any other carbohydrate type drink. [5]

Researchers over in the Research Department of Human Nutrition and Center for Advanced Food Studies in Denmark [8] concluded that consumption of alcoholic beverages, and wine in particular, may enhance total energy intake at a meal relative to a soft drink, when served with no restriction.

3- Decrease in Testosterone and an Increase in Cortisol

A study of 8 healthy male volunteers observed that after drinking alcohol, the effects of a significant decrease in testosterone and an increase in cortisol (a muscle destroying hormone) lasted up to 24 hours! [6]

The only real question to ask yourself is this…

If you are serious about building muscle and burning fat, you want all the free testosterone levels you can get and you want to reduce cortisol in any way you can. That means go lite on the drinking because it does affect your hormones.

What more…

Is that the effects were even worse if you exercise before drinking. [1] This means that if you are going out and will be drinking more than a small amount of alcohol, you might as well skip the gym.

Not shocking is a study done by the Department of Radiology, Sahlgrenska Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden [2] that determined increased waist to hip ratio of alcoholics may include not only changes in adipose tissue, but also in muscle tissue distribution.

In layman’s terms.. that means more fat around the waist and less overall muscle mass.

4- Decrease in vitamin and mineral absorption

When you consume large quantities of alcohol, your liver is busy converting the alcohol to acetate and any vitamins and minerals that it might process are taken up by the detoxification process.

Alcohol interferes with the metabolism of most vitamins, and with the absorption of many nutrients. Alcohol stimulates both urinary calcium and magnesium excretion. [13]

This just means that you’ll get less of a benefit from the “healthy” meal you may be consuming.

Food in the stomach will compete with ethanol for absorption into the blood stream. It is well known that alcohol competes and influences the processing of nutrients in the body. [12]

5- Decrease in protein synthesis of type II fibers

This means the actual building of muscle is slowed down by 20%+ or more. This included a 35% decrease in muscle insulin-like growth factor-I (GF-I). [9]

6- Dehydration

A common side effect of alcohol is dehydration. Alcohol is a diuretic. Drinks containing 4% alcohol tend to delay the recovery process. [11]

Considering how important water is to muscle building and general health, it’s clear that dehydration can put a damper on your progress. After alcohol consumption the first thing you might want to do is drink coffee. But that’s a diuretic as well. How to avoid dehydration? Drink more water.

7- Sleep

Alcohol consumption, especially at the times when you would normally sleep, can have effects on the quality of sleep. Clearly high quality sleep is extremely important to the rebuilding and growth process of muscle. Without proper rest and recovery, your gains will be affected.

Alcohol consumption can induce sleep disorders by disrupting the sequence and duration of sleep states and by altering total sleep time as well as the time required to fall asleep. [10]

8- The next day

A rather obvious conclusion but if you plan on drinking on a Friday night in excess then the leg workout you thought of doing on Saturday morning won’t be top notch. It takes a bit to recover, your body to detoxify and for you mentally to be prepared to workout.

Not to mention you need energy for the workout ahead.

Sure you can hit the weights but my point is…

It’s not going to be the best workout you’ve ever experienced.

At this point you might be totally discouraged to ever drink any alcohol again. But there’s some good news.

Here’s proof…

In the November 2004 issue of the International Journal of Obesity [7] they did a study on the effects of moderate consumption of white wine on weight loss.

Each group consumed 1500 calories. 150 calories came from white wine in one group and 150 calories from grape juice in another.

The conclusion?

An energy-restricted diet is effective in overweight and obese subjects used to drinking moderate amounts of alcohol. A diet with 10% of energy derived from white wine is as effective as an isocaloric diet with 10% of energy derived from grape juice.

It’s simple: Moderation is the key! (with first place being abstinence as you already know).

In any event…

The effects of alcohol on your body when it comes to building muscle and burning fat are quite clear. It is a lot more than just some extra calories stored as fat. If you consume too much, it can derail your goals a lot longer after your head has hit the pillow and you’ve gone to sleep.

Can Being Overweight Be Inherited?

January 22, 2011
By

How many times do you hear overweight people say things like, “I’m only this way because I’m big boned” or “both of my parents are big so it’s in my genes” or even “all of the women/men in my family are overweight”.

So now the question is, if other members of your family are overweight and have always been, does it mean that you might have inherited the “fat” gene and are predisposed to being overweight yourself? Is there anything that can be done about it, or are you doomed to be overweight for the rest of your life?

There are some facts that must be considered before you assign blame for your weight problem to your family tree. Genetics do decide what the shape of you body will be as well as determining your height and possible risks to your health. If there is a history of obesity in your family, you may have a higher potential for it, but it does not mean that you are doomed to a life of plumpness.

The fact is, even though you may have inherited a higher concentration of fat cells from your family gene pool, it is the bad habits that you inherit from them that will contribute more to your weight than your genes.

Here are the facts about what makes you overweight that you must know to help you break the family tradition of living with that extra padding.

For openers, the food choices that you make play a very important role in whether or not you will become overweight. Not knowing what a proper portion size is during mealtime will also hurt your weight. If as a kid growing up, your parents always went back for seconds during meals, you probably will have inherited that habit as well. If your parents always ate high calorie snacks at night while watching TV, well, you get the picture.

Another downfall to losing the weight gain battle is physical inactivity. While just being physically inactive does not add extra fat by itself, most overweight people are inactive and that means you will burn less calories throughout the day. When an inactive person eats even a normal amount of food daily which is usually still more than they need, they are more likely to store the extra calories as fat.

Your age plays a part in your weight also. When people age, they typically become less active. Also, after age 30 or so, an inactive person will lose around ½ to 1 pound of muscle tissue per year. This makes your metabolism slow down being that muscle is active tissue and the more you have, the higher your metabolism, the less you have, the lower your metabolism. This will account for weight gain.

Most overweight people are not that way because of the genes they inherited, but because of the bad habits they inherited as well as ones they developed on their own. According to the American Medical Association, less than 2% of all obesity can be directly attributed to any kind of metabolic disorder or hormone imbalance.

The bottom line is all of the excuses in the world for being overweight won’t take one pound of fat off of you. The whole thing comes down to modifying your lifestyle to one that is conducive to proper weight control. That means eating less than you’ve been used to eating and being more physically active than you’re used to being.
